Chapter 22 

Alan said, “Not only would I lose my streak, but I might also cost the Joyner family their case.” 

In response, Xavier just scoffed and hung up, tossing his phone onto the coffee table. 

The Joyner family case had already started being processed, yet Lily had not returned home. As he pondered the possibility of her waiting for him to beg her to come back, his expression. turned grim. 

In the night, he watched the cigarette in his hand flicker as the cold wind swept over him, cooling the burning desire in his body. It was the early hours of the morning when he finally went to bed, but he was sleepless; the lingering scent of Lily’s scent on the sheets kept him 

awake. 

Xavier could not believe he was losing sleep over Lily. Of course, he told himself, it was not because he missed her, not in a sentimental way. He was a man in his prime who missed her body, nothing more. 

The thought of how much Lily had changed recently filled him with frustration and anger. How dare she act so differently? How dare she keep pushing his limits? 

The next day at Nova Group, Xavier arrived at the office early. Timothy came to report the day’s schedule, treading carefully for fear that Xavier might bring up yesterday’s events. 

Then again, Xavier was not one to let things slide just because Timothy was afraid. While massaging his wrist, he asked, “Did she say anything before she left yesterday?” 

Timothy answered honestly, “Mrs. Fulton just said thank you.” 

“Just thank you?” Xavier’s face darkened.

Her thanks proved she knew that getting a lawyer from Alan’s firm was due to Yet, she could not even apologize in person and had to send her thanks through someone else. 

“Mrs. Fulton was grateful, though I don’t dare to take credit since I only arranged the lawyer through your connections,” Timothy replied nervously. 

He was unable to read Xavier’s true thoughts. While on the surface, Xavier seemed so displeased with Lily, Timothy thought he was behaving strangely. 

Xavier tensed. “She thanked you?” 

Sensing danger, Timothy quickly backtracked and explained, “Of course, she meant to thank you, but you left in such a hurry!” However, his attempt at damage control came too late. 

All morning, Xavier was in a particularly foul mood. The company employees assumed it was because Sarah had been bullied by her neighbors

Thanks to Maryanne’s “inside sources” at the company, she soon learned of this. Though furious, she held her tongue, seeing how worried Lily was about Hayden’s situation. 

“You haven’t slept all night–you should rest,” Maryanne said. 

After returning home, Lily had spent the entire night in the living room researching similar hit -and–run cases, knowing that such cases required ironclad evidence. 

Lily had met the victim’s family yesterday, and she understood their uncontrollable emotions and rage. Nevertheless, Lily did not want to upset the deceased’s mother further and planned. to look for clues from the victim instead.
