As Terence spoke, he lifted his gaze and looked directly at Lily.

Lily was stunned. She quickly turned away to avoid his gaze. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have pried into your private matters."

She'd asked that question thinking that his reply would be related to work—she'd thought he'd gone abroad for better opportunities. She hadn't expected Terence to be so open to the extent of sharing such personal details.

She didn't know how else to continue the conversation.

Terence lowered his gaze and continued chopping the ingredients. "There's no need to act so formal around me."

"Alright." Lily assumed that he was just trying to be polite. She quickly turned around and left.

She was aware that she'd been a bit of a mess recently. Besides, Terence was a guest at her place. So, it wasn't right for him to be cooking and taking care of her every day.

Her thoughts were all over the place, and she didn't have the energy to make small talk.

She thought to herself that once her divorce was settled, she would be in a better state to properly thank Maryanne and Terence.

An hour later, dinner was served. Maryanne ate as if she hadn't seen food in days. Meanwhile, she also continued to curse at Xavier between bites.

Lily was used to Maryanne's behavior; she didn't bother to stop her. Terence, on the other hand, ate his food quietly. From time to time, he would also serve food for Maryanne and Lily.

After dinner, Maryanne and Terence got prepared to leave.

"Terence, why do I have to go home? I want to stay with Lily and keep her company!" Initially, Maryanne had planned to stay the night. However, Terence wouldn't allow it.

He quickly started the engine and drove off.

"Staying with her isn't going to comfort her. You're just hurting her more with the things you say."

During dinner, Maryanne had repeatedly brought up Xavier. Despite Terence's attempts to stop her, she hadn't picked up on his hints.

Lily needed peace, not someone who continuously reminded her about Xavier.

"Why is it a problem if I curse Xavier? Lily always complains about him to me!" Maryanne frowned, clearly unhappy with Terence's criticism.

At the entrance of the gated community, the security gate didn't automatically open.

Terence stopped the car, unbuckled his seatbelt, and got out of the car. He walked up to the security guard and handed him a cigarette. The security guard appeared to be in his late 50s or early 60s.

"You're not a resident here, are you?" asked the security guard.

Terence nodded. "No, I came to visit a friend."

The security guard accepted the cigarette, lit it, and took a puff. "There was an incident yesterday with a resident losing something. From now on, non-residents aren't allowed in."
