"It's nothing." Samantha didn't want to say much about Cynthia. Talking about it wouldn't change a thing anyway.
"Alright. Regardless of what's put you in a bad mood, it's all the more reason why you should come to the party and unwind!" Ryan said.
His warm, enthusiastic tone made her wonder if she was the one lying in the hospital bed instead of Ryan. But she still wasn't interested. "I really don't want to go."
"Samantha, I got hurt because of you! Now that I'm finally getting out of the hospital, I just want to throw a party to celebrate. Can't you at least show up for me?" Ryan whined. "I'd be so heartbroken if you don't. Can you really bear to watch me be sad?"
Samantha had always been soft-hearted. She was weak against this kind of guilt-tripping and caved in in the end. "Fine."
"Don't worry. As long as you show up, I promise you'll have a fun, relaxing time at the party!" Ryan said happily.
Samantha merely hummed disinterestedly.
…
Ryan was discharged from the hospital a few days later and made a huge fuss about wanting Samantha to pick him up.
Samantha was frustrated by all his pestering, but she could only give in. She figured she owed him that much after he had saved her life.
But as soon as they left the hospital, the car headed straight for a styling studio.
The spacious store had spotless floor-to-ceiling windows that let in streams of bright light. The whole place seemed to glow.
Samantha immediately wanted to back out. "What are we doing here? Aren't we going to a party?"
"We are, but we have to get ready first," Ryan said cheerfully.
"Do I really need to go all out for a party?" Samantha asked.
"Even though I said it's just a casual party, most of the guests will probably be all dressed up. I can't let you be outdone, so I have to help you make a strong impression there," Ryan replied.
"Actually, I think it's fine if I don't go," Samantha said, turning to leave.
Ryan grabbed her firmly. As soon as she struggled, Ryan started complaining about his leg hurting.
She really couldn't argue with him. She was worried that his wound might reopen after going through such an arduous recovery. And if that happened, she would be overwhelmed with guilt. She had no choice but to go along with his plans.
