“I get it.” Ellis nodded like she was taking Cleveland’s advice seriously.

Truth was, she had her own ideas. But she knew Cleveland meant well, so she let him talk.

Once she stepped off the elevator, Ellis headed to the parking garage, found her car, and drove to the upscale restaurant Maya had picked

Truth be told, she hadn’t gone anywhere this high–end since divorcing Easton. If it weren’t for her recent raise hitting just the right number, she wouldn’t have even considered splurging on dinner tonight.

Maya had arrived earlier and was flipping through the menu when Ellis showed up. She greeted her with a quick wave, eyes still on the page.

Ellis flopped down and waved a hand grandly. “Don’t stress about the prices. Order whatever you want.”

“Don’t be dumb. You’re not a sugar mama. Maya didn’t believe in blind spending “Let’s make sure it’s worth the money. I don’t want to regret this the second the check hits the table.”

“It’s just a one–off I’m not living like this every day.” Ellis didn’t care what it cost tonight. She was here for good vibes. “Wanna go somewhere after dinner? It’s the weekend. We can afford to stay out a little late.”

“I think there’s a chill bar downstairs. Wanna grab a couple drinks?”

“Absolutely,” Ellis answered without hesitation.

A drink sounded perfect. Her ex had been getting on her nerves all week. That simmering frustration hadn’t quite gone away yet. Plus, with her period coming up, if she didn’t drink now, she wouldn’t be able to for the next week.

After dinner, the two of them made their way to the bar.

place was pretty quiet, the music soft and upbeat–just the right vibe for a drink and a good talk.

They’d known each other for over twenty years. They could talk for hours, and tonight was no exception. The conversation flowed, the alcohol followed. But the downside? Ellis had no tolerance.

At some point, a blush crept across her cheeks, and her eyes started to glaze over.

Maya was too focused on the live singer on stage to notice–until she suddenly felt a weight on her shoulder.

She glanced down and found Ellis’s head leaning against her.

“Hey. Ellis, are you drunk?” Maya nudged her gently, trying to get her to open her eyes at least.

But Ellis, overtaken by a wave of dizziness, didn’t budge.

“I wanna sleep,” she mumbled, turning her head to find a cozier spot.

Her speech was slurred and lazy, Classic drunk talk. Maya quickly stiffened “No, no sleeping! Not yet!”

If Ellis passed out now, there was no way she’d get her home.
