Maxwell stepped into the hallway without a word.

But it was completely empty. Ellis was nowhere in sight.

As her boss, he knew attending the banquet was part of her responsibilities. The staff member’s voice was cautious. “Mr. Maxwell, please wait here for a moment.”

Back inside the banquet hall, Mike noticed a few people entering and inspecting the space. It struck him as strange.

Is something going on?

Just then, Jimmy walked over, grinning with a knowing look. “Here,” he said, slipping a keycard into Mike’s hand. “A little surprise gift for you.”

They were longtime friends, which meant their personalities and approaches to life weren’t far off. The moment Jimmy said that, Mike understood exactly what he meant. But with hotel staff clearly investigating something and Maxwell actively searching for Ellis, the pieces snapped together in Mike’s mind.

His eyes widened. “You didn’t seriously take…”

When Mike hesitated to take the keycard, Jimmy casually slipped it into the pocket of his jacket, still smiling in that infuriatingly smug way. “Don’t waste time. Go enjoy yourself.”

“Hold on!” Mike yanked the card from his pocket. “That girl is Maxwell’s assistant. He’s looking for her right now. You locked her in a room? Are you trying to start a war?”

Mike understood how men thought, because he was one himself.

Even if Maxwell wasn’t particularly interested in Ellis anymore, men were naturally territorial. No man liked the idea of being undermined, especially not when it came to a woman.

What Jimmy had done looked like an outright betrayal. If Maxwell found out, there was no way he’d let it go. And when things blew up, it would be difficult to fix it.

“Mr. Bowen, relax. I’ve taken care of it,” Jimmy said coolly. He had already looked into who brought Ellis to the banquet and confirmed her identity. Just a low–level assistant–someone insignificant. There was no need to worry. She was expendable.

“Forget it!” Mike shoved the keycard back at him. “I have my principles. Let her go immediately.”
