“Don’t ask me for a reward!” Ellis said with a forced smile. “I can’t give you what you want! But if you want to be scolded or beaten, I’m sure I can oblige. Do you want that?”
“Yes,” Easton blurted out.
“…”Ellis was speechless. “Are you crazy?”
Had my ex–husband become a masochist?
I was insulting him and beating him, and he was actually okay with it?
And he answered so quickly!
“You won’t scold me much, and you won’t hit me hard. Besides, you know your limits,” Easton said simply. As long as I could see her, a few insults or light blows were nothing.
Then how about 1 send you to a mental hospital? You can stay there for a few days, and I’ll visit you every day. Sound good?” Ellis half meant it. Ideally, the mental hospital can keep him locked away forever, cutting off any chance of him reappearing in my life.
“I’d be happy if you stayed with me,” Easton replied seriously.
“Get lost!”
Talking to him was infuriating. Every word out of his mouth only made me angrier. Ellis hung up the phone in a huff.
He’s really sick!
Silently cursing her ex, Ellis tried to focus on her work.
Then the office phone rang again. Her first thought was that it was her ex–husband calling. Fortunately, she glanced at the screen and saw that it was an internal call from Maxwell. Relieved, she answered politely, “Mr. Maxwell,”
“Ms. Harper, come into my office” Maxwell said.
“Alright,” Ellis replied politely.
As soon as she hung up. Ellis made her way to Maxwell’s office.
Maybe my ex–husband had driven me crazy, because suddenly every man in the world, except him, seemed incredibly pleasant. For a moment, I even found my boss more attractive than NINAL
She put on her professional smile and approached Maxwell,
“There’s a business trip,” Maxwell said, handing her a file. “Arrange it.”
Having accompanied him on trips before, Ellis knew the drill.
Back at her desk, she began planning the itinerary. The work kept her busy into the evening.
A shadow fell across her desk, interrupting her concentration. She looked up and saw Maxwell standing there.
“Working late tonight, Ms. Harper?” he asked.
Accustomed to such questions from her boss, Ellis nodded, “Yes.”
“Have yo
you eaten? Maxwell asked.
“No,” Ellis replied.
She shrugged off his perfunctory concern.

Mr. Marwell didn’t always eat in his office; sometimes he ate in the cafeteria. I assumed he used the mealtime to check on the staff’s work.
Hat Maxwell surprised her again. After picking up his food, he sat right across from her.
At the same table, a question came to her mind.
Had I become one of Manoel’s inner circlet
Why else would he be eating with me?
“Not hungry, Ms. Harper?” Maxwell asked before picking up his spoon and fork. The girl across from him had gone through several facial expressions, her eyes darting around as if deep in thought, yet she hadn’t touched her food.
“No, hum. I mean, I’m hungry Ellis denied it with a smile, forcing herself to take a bite.
A few minutes later, Maxwell asked, as if struck by realization. “Are you uncomfortable eating with me?”
Ellis froze.
Mr. Marwell had hit the nail on the head,
Since he was the one who signed her paycheck, she opted for diplomacy. “A little awkward, but more flattered. This is my first time dining with you, Mr. Maxwell.”
“Don’t worry. There’ll be plenty of chances.
Ellis didn’t answer, studying his smile. Something felt wrong.
Ever since I’d started working here, Marwell had been giving me mired signals, the strongest being his subtle hints about firing me. Now. being around him felt strangely pleasant, like a warm breeze.
The contrast was so stark that I wondered if he’d been replaced by another person.
Confused, Ellis finished the meal.
Exhausted after a long day, all she wanted to do was collapse into bed as sodo as she got home.
But as she stepped into the foyer, ready to drop her bag and slip into slippers, her peripheral vision caught a movement. Her ex–husband was standing in the living room. When he saw her, he brightened slightly
“You’re back late today”
He walked toward her as he spoke.
Ellis grabbed her slippers, tempted to throw them in his face.
“This is my home, not yours.”
Her meaning was clear. Get out here and stop treating my place like yours,
“Tll be leaving soon,” Easton said, standing close, his gaze lingering on her hungrily. “I haven’t seen you in days. I missed you.”
