Beneath Willow’s belly, in her womb, she carried her and Julian’s flesh and blood.

Her belly was still flat, but Julian could feel like he could sense the life pulsing underneath it. He did the math and figured she’d conceived during that time at the apartment. That was the only time they’d slept together in the past months, and they’d been engrossed in each other.

Willow guessed that Julian had learned the truth. She saw the repentant look on his face and chuckled softly. “There’s no chance of forgiveness between us, Julian. If not for this child, you would’ve already left to fulfill your true love’s dying wish.

“You should’ve anticipated how we would turn out the moment you decided to leave–I’m sure you thought things through before making your decision. We’re adults, so we should be well aware that there’s no turning back sometimes. I know that, and you do, too.”

She continued, “When I saw you and Alicia arm in arm at the theater the other day, I couldn’t help thinking what a perfect pair you two made. I suppose that’s what first loves are like. See? I was serious about giving you my blessings.

“I won’t stay in the same spot and wait for you forever, Julian. I wouldn’t be able to forgive myself if I were to forgive you. To tell you the truth, things were over for us the moment Leonard went to Grandsburg.”

Willow was absolutely right, but Julian still wanted to ask for a chance. She didn’t give it to him. “There’s no point threatening me with anyone anymore, Julian. I’m treating you the way you treated me. Is there anything wrong with that?”

He was dressed in all–black and didn’t move from his position on his knees before her. He looked humbled and submissive. At that moment, he was willing to give her everything he had.

The yellowed leaves filtered the sunlight from above.

Alic watched him and Willow from a distance, her face pale. She found it hard to accept how lowly Julian was making himself look. As far as she remembered, he’d never looked this fragile and broken. This was a side he would show only to Willow; this was how loving they were.

What about her, then? What was she, in the grand scheme of things?

No, she hadn’t lost to Willow. She’d lost to a baby.

Beside her, Melanie said cautiously, “Let me take you back to the hospital, Alicia. Julian is almost 30 and must want a child. You’re still the one I favor.”

Alicia turned to her and smiled faintly. “I should be happy for Willow since she’s pregnant.”

Melanie was relieved to hear that. “You’ve always been so understanding, Alicia.”

She had other things on her mind, so she left after dropping Alicia back at the hospital.

Charlie and Nancy had just cleaned up the VIP ward at Heartwell Hospital when they saw Alicia being sent back. They were

stunned.

Nancy asked tentatively, “Was the flight delayed?”

Alicia lay on the bed. After a while, she said indifferently, “Willow’s pregnant, and Julian wanted to come back to care for the baby. I can’t deny she’s lucky, getting pregnant at this time.”

Nancy gaped, “I thought she couldn’t have children. Where did the baby come from?”

Alicia said, “It’s not a deception. She’s eating for two.”

Charlie clapped, looking happy. “That means I’m going to be a grandfather!”

Alicia sneered. “She doesn’t even acknowledge you as her father, let alone her child’s grandfather. Your love for her is wasted,
