I was still confused, trying to piece together what was going on in Zander's mind.

“Baby, just sit and relax,” he said, his tone calm but firm. “Leave the rest to me.”

Easier said than done. How could I possibly relax when I knew our lives—and the fate of so many others—hung by a thread?

“Zander, I still don’t get it,” I pressed, suspicion creeping into my voice. “How is it that you’ve found Damon but still haven’t caught him? What are you not telling me?”

His jaw tightened slightly, but he met my gaze with steady resolve. “I haven’t pinpointed his exact location yet, but I’m close,” he replied, his voice laced with determination.

Before I could question him further, Maddox entered the room.

“Alpha,” he greeted, touching his heart and bowing respectfully. Then his eyes shifted to me. “Luna.” He repeated the gesture with the same reverence.

I gave him a soft smile and a nod in acknowledgment, though my mind was already racing.

“What’s the update, Maddox?” Zander asked, cutting straight to the point.

“Alpha, as you instructed, our people have been keeping a close watch on Alpha Albert…” Maddox began.

That caught my attention instantly. My curiosity spiked, and I leaned forward.

“And?” I asked, unable to hold back, my voice urging him to continue.

Maddox turned to meet my gaze briefly before continuing.

“Alpha was right. We managed to follow him up to a certain point, but then…” He hesitated, his expression clouding. “It was as if magic happened—he vanished without a trace.”

“Where is he now?” Zander asked sharply, his tone commanding.

“He returned about an hour later. He’s back at the pack house now,” Maddox informed, his words deliberate.

Zander hummed, a deep, contemplative sound, as his eyes darkened with thought.

“I agreed to the marriage proposal just to keep them close. Even when I’d forgotten everything, I still didn’t trust him,” Zander admitted. I narrowed my eyes at him. Did he even realize he was going to marry my sister?

Sensing my glare, Zander quickly raised his hands in surrender, his voice tinged with desperation as he explained, “I had no intention of marrying your half-sister, my mate.”

His earnest tone and the panic in his eyes made me smile, even during this tense discussion.

Maddox looked at his alpha with deeply confused eyes, clearly struggling to piece everything together.

He had no idea what more was happening or how they had all been made to forget the past. We hadn’t had time to explain it all to him.

“I’ll explain everything to you, Maddox,” Zander assured, noticing the puzzled expression on his beta’s face.

It was a mark of a good alpha to never hide the truth from his right hand, his beta. But Zander and Maddox’s bond went deeper than just the typical relationship between an alpha and beta of the Moonglow Pack. They had been childhood friends, and their connection was one of unshakable trust and loyalty. They were more like brothers than just leader and second-in-command.

“Now it’s our turn to take the shot,” Zander suddenly announced, his eyes gleaming with determination as if he’d read my mind. “And this time, we’ll play our best game.”

I could only hope he was right. This time, we had to hit the bullseye.
