Chapter 261 She Hides Something From Me

It wasn’t hard to guess that Beth’s rash action against Maggie. A significant part of her motivation must have been the belief that Maggie was pregnant, leading her to a desperate act..

Maggie conhi even picture the scenario Beth had concocted in her mind.

Through a calculated scheme, she ended up in Nathael’s bed. Out of responsibility, he needed to take care of her–only to have heruse the child as leverage to secure her position.

But no matter how Beth imagined it, it was all a farce.

Beth looked at Maggie incredulously; her pupils dilated with shock and, following that, an overwhelming wave of anger.

“Maggic Adam!” Beth managed to squeeze the words out through clenched teeth; every pore on her face seemed to seething with her fury.

Maggie responded with a smirk, tinged with innocence, “I never thought you’d take a joke so seriously.”

Beth bit her lip hard, her eyes reddening.

Yeah, she hadn’t expected this.

Perhaps she could dismiss it if it was solely Maggie’s version of events. Nathael had joined in on her antics -how could she not believe it?

Maggie withdrew her gaze and left with Nathael

Passing by Ronald, she turned to him and said, “Dad, I don’t want people to think our family has fallen so low that we’d use such a situation to profit from the Brays. So, I took it upon myself to get a pair of watches from them; you wouldn’t hold it against me, would you?”

Ronald’s face darkened immediately. “What are you talking about? Do you believe that I am greedy for such things? You did well this time; I was only going to ask for some justice on your behalf.”

Seeing Ronald struggle to keep his composure was immensely satisfying for Maggie.

“I knew you wouldn’t mind,” she said sweetly.

Ronald managed a smile and said, “It’s perfect that you got those watches. You and Mr. Harris can wear them together. The two of you are an attractive couple; it’ll be a lovely sight.”

“Dad, I was going to bring this up with you. Once Ms. Bray delivers the watches, I’ll have them sent to you and mom. I haven’t really bought you anything over the years; consider this a token of my filial piety.”

Maggie spoke again. This time, both Ronald and Nathael were surprised by her words.

Nathael glanced down at her. Maggie’s face was radiant, her almond eyes clear and sincere, making it impossible to refuse her.

Ronald hesitated for a few seconds. He stammered, “This might not be appropriate.”

“What do you think, Nathael?” Maggie turned to look at Nathael.

He nodded. “It’s perfectly suitable for you two. It’s Maggie’s thoughtful gesture: please accept it with peace of mind.”

“Since Mr. Harris has spoken and it’s Maggie’s heartfelt gesture, I shall accept it graciously.”

What else could Ronald say?

But she laughed and accepted it.

Heaven knows, he’d rather have substantial compensation from the Brays and Nathael’s’support than a mere pair of fancy watches!

Observing the stiff wrinkles in Ronald’s eyes, Maggie felt triumphantly vindictive. She had managed to disgust two people with one gesture.

Beth probably assumed that she and Nathael would wear the matching watches together,

idn’t she?

That thought would probably make her infuriated and consumed with jealousy.

What a pity that Maggie found the idea distasteful and had no intention of sharing Beth’s things with Natharl

She couldn’t help but wonder what Beth’s reaction would be when she saw Ronald and Olivia wearing the

watches.

Maggie reveled in the mischief of the thought, considering herself quite the scoundrel.

No sooner had they left the banquet hall than Nathael swept her into his arms.

Maggie was caught off guard. She instinctively clung to his neck and asked, “What are you doing? People are still watching!”

Maggie laughed lightly, marveling at how shrewd he was, always able to read her mind so easily.

After a pause, she said, “If Timmothy and Beth really intend to harm me, Nolan alone couldn’t stop them. We couldn’t always be on guard with those people, I think.”

Maggie didn’t mention the Camerons. Since she learned the Camerons had poisoned her, she naturally holds leverage against them.

For example, it was possible for Sierra to go mad,

After a long silence, Nathael spoke slowly, “You don’t like Nolan reporting everything to me.

Maggie remained silent.

Indeed, that was the crux of the matter.

Before, Maggie could have been indifferent, as she had nothing to hide. But now, she couldn’t allow Nathael’s people to be around her.

Secrets seemed poised to burst forth from beneath the surface.

Maggie wasn’t a naive girl who didn’t understand gratitude or discern right from wrong. Nor did she disregard trivial matters like privacy and freedom. If not for these secrets, she would have welcomed Nathael’s people by her side, borrowing their strength for her own purposes. However, harboring secrets felt like constantly walking on thin ice, always on guard.

But carrying secrets always felt like walking on thin ice, constantly vigilant.

“Maggie, you’re hiding something from me,” Nathael said, his gaze intense with probing, restrained pain, and anxiety.

He noticed the sudden distance between them and her subtle efforts to keep him at bay.
