Manuela woke up a bit. Being guilty for her earlier outburst, she knew she was in the wrong. She quickly agreed, “Okay, okay, don't worry. I’ll go to the hospital right now and stay with Mom. I won’t leave until you get back.”
At least my mom’s surgery would go smoothly. I booked the earliest flight and rushed to the airport.
By the time I got to the hospital, it was already two in the morning.
The operating room was still lit up red. Only my neighbor, the old lady, was waiting outside. She seemed to have found her anchor when she saw me. She finally let out a breath of relief. "Gabriel, you're finally here. Your mom’s situation was so urgent, and we couldn’t find anyone to sign. I was so worried. Thankfully, the surgeon was a good one. He saw that your mom was about to pass out and, rather than take responsibility, decided to operate on your mom first.”
I had a lump in my throat and I knew what had happened. I asked in a low voice, "My wife didn’t come here?"
The old lady shook her head. “I don’t know her number. Later, I couldn’t get through to you, and I was worried that your mom needed someone with her. I stayed here all night. Since you’re here now, I’ll go back. Don’t worry too much. Your mom is strong. She’ll be fine.”
I nodded gratefully and transferred $1,000 to her.
She wouldn’t take it and gave it back.
A random neighbor who didn’t even know my family had stayed at the hospital all night. But Manuela, my wife, had promised to stay with my mom but hadn’t even shown up.
I sat in the chair, rubbed my face, and the storm in my heart momentarily subsided when the operating room light turned green.
My mom’s surgery was successful, and she was out of danger. I finally felt relieved.
On the third day of caring for my mom in the hospital, Manuela finally showed up.
