After being together for seven years, Irvin was the person who understood fne the most. He knew I tended to push unimportant people away.
Bit by bit, I’d moved them to the edge of my life. Then, it would eventually reach a point where I would forget about them altogether.
Previously in the lab, I had treated him distantly, like an acquaintance. Before then, he had still been deliberating on whether to proceed with his hypnotist plan. After that, he immediately decided to put his plan into action.
Without waiting for my response, he looked me in the eye and said, “But Emi, I really can’t allow you to forget me completely. I can’t stand you looking at me like I’m a stranger–I just can’t.
“I don’t know what I would do if there’s truly no chance for us to be together again. I know what I did was wrong, but I couldn’t help myself.”
Irvin wouldn’t be able to control himself unless he was dead.
I didn’t know which of these was true–did he love so much that he couldn’t bear to lose me? Or was he unable to stand losing what he thought was a perfect love because of his own foolishness? So much so that he had fallen too deep into his obsessiveness?
All I knew was that he was borderline crazed despite appearing calm. And the scariest kind of madness was the one that lurked underneath a calm surface. I had to calm him down and give him something to hope for so he would keep hold of his rationale.
Thus, I suggested, “How about this–we both take a step back. You’ll stop whatever you were planning on doing and wait until I’ve completed my research. Then, if I still haven’t regained my memories naturally by then, I’ll consider allowing your hypnotist to help me recover them.
I added, “That being said, I can’t guarantee I’ll take you back if my memories do come back. So, if that happens, you can’t force me to do anything else.”
Irvin’s eyes had been filled with frantic despair. However, they immediately lit up after I spoke. He looked like a dog who had been given a bone–the only thing missing was a wagging tail.
“Okay!” he exclaimed.
He was confident I would remember my love for him once I got my memories back. Then, I would surely give him another chance because of how much I loved him.
My gaze darkened after he left. I wasn’t going to allow myself to be swayed by the uncontrollable pity I felt for him. He had broken the rules first by trying to manipulate me. So, of course, I would play along and deceive him.
I remained where I was and looked over the data from my research. Gideon arrived just as I was about to finish.
As mentioned, he had taken over his family’s business, which was the ownership of a pharmacy chain. Thanks to his capability, he quickly turned the chain into one of the largest and strongest in the country.
Gideon’s stores also carried the widest range of medical equipment in the country. Hence, I always ordered the medical equipment that the lab needed from him.
We had known each other for over five years, but we weren’t close. However, over the past six months, we had started to grow more familiar.
This time, I wasn’t approaching Gideon because the lab needed something. Previously, I had visited a home for disabled people as part of my research. When I did, I noticed many families lacked smart medical devices that
