“That’s how it always goes in novels!” Cordelia confidently declared.

Her husband and I couldn’t help laughing at her self–assuredness We both felt she had read too many romance novels and had been sucked in too deep into the fictional world.

Neither of us imagined that her suspicion was actually true. After all, art often imitated life.

After dinner, Cordelia dragged us off for karaoke to keep the celebration going. And by the end of that day, I had learned a lot about her husband, Hugo Chapman.

Cordelia had always wanted to date without commitment. But now I finally understood why she had been so eager to marry Hugo.

“When did you get IVF done?” she asked.

I had told Cordelia before that I was considering choosing a donor from a sperm bank and undergoing IVF. So, naturally, she assumed my twins were test–tube babies.

Taking a steadying breath, I explained everything. “I didn’t. They’re…”

I told Cordelia how I ended up sleeping with Irvin on the night of the networking dinner.

When she heard that the babies I was carrying were Irvin’s, Cordelia didn’t know how to react. A multitude of indiscernible emotions flashed across her face.

After a prolonged silence, she exclaimed, “But, Emi, Grace is already pregnant with Irvin’s child!”

“I know. There’s no possibility left between us, and I’ve already made that clear to him,” I replied.

“Then, why… Why are you…” Cordelia trailed off.

She wanted to ask why I was still keeping Irvin’s babies. But then, Cordelia thought about how I was pregnant with twins, and how it was a rare occurrence. She also remembered how I had miscarried in the sea, and how that had affected my health much so that I had struggled to conceive ever since.

Cordelia was afraid that if I aborted the babies, I might never be able to conceive ever again.

She couldn’t help but hug me as her eyes glistened with tears. “Darling, you’re still so young. If you keep these babies, how will you find a partner in the future? Don’t tell me you don’t plan to date again or get married? Are you really planning on spending your whole life alone?”
