That criminal organization had been trying to get me to join their research project because they wanted to develop a new AI chip. Using existing neural chip technology as a foundation, they wanted me to research and develop one that could control the human brain’s neural signals.
With it, that criminal organization would be able to ensure complete allegiance and total obedience from its members. Not only that, they could also implant it into specific targets of their choosing to allow them to control even more people.
That was something I absolutely refused to do. So, even though they used Cordelia and her entire family to threaten me, I still couldn’t agree to it.
That being said, I also refused to allow anything to happen to her and her family members. Hence, I scrambled all over and pulled every string I could to try and create a protective shield around them.
It just so happened Cordelia was in Lestoria to settle a few things. So, I immediately flew there to inform her of the situation and warn her to be careful when with her family in the coming days.
I also told her to move around only when protected by the security detail I had arranged. And while it would be inconvenient, I asked her to bear with it as I was already notifying the relevant authorities of the situation.
Then, once their safety was assured, she and her family could go back to living normally.
Cordelia immediately hugged me once I finished filling her in.
“Thank you for all the effort, darling. Have you been losing sleep these past few days because you were busy protecting me? Look at you–you’ve got dark circles under your eyes!” she exclaimed.
No matter the situation, those who truly loved you would always put you first.
Cordelia was an example of this. I had clearly dragged her into this mess and was the reason she was in danger. Yet, she didn’t even blame me at all. Not only that, her first reaction was to worry about how exhausted I had to be.
I could genuinely die happy since I had a friend like her.
Cordelia continued, “You’re pregnant, so you shouldn’t stress yourself out. Don’t fret too much.

“That criminal organization wants you to join their research project because they need your smarts, which requires you to be a willing contributor. And if they want your cooperation, they definitely won’t kill me outright.
“Time is on our side, and it’s not too late to start panicking only once something actually has happened. So right now, let’s focus on taking care of your health. Everything else can wait,” she said comfortingly.
I looked at Cordelia. Overwhelmed with emotion, I hugged her tightly. “You really are the best, darling. I dragged you into this, and you’re still only thinking of me. I love you for life!”
“Right back at ya!” Cordelia said and hugged me back.
A moment later, she added, “But don’t say things like that. You didn’t drag me into anything. This is a matter of integrity!
“Everyone has lines they’d never cross–ours is never to become evil people who do bad things. No matter what happens or what kind of threats we face, we’d rather die than compromise on our principles!”
Cordelia and I were so close because we shared the same core values and moral compasses. We might not be saintly or model citizens, but we did draw the line at doing heinous things and would never become villains. This was regardless of the threats we faced, even if it meant death.
My darling Cordelia was such an amazing person. So, of course, there was no way I could let anything happen to her or her family.
Then, I heard back from Mr. J–the high–profile patient I had treated previously.

On his behalf, someone came back with a message saying nothing would happen to Cordelia and her family as long as they remained within the country. Only then did my anxious heart finally settle.
Coincidentally, Cordelia had wrapped up her business. So, with the beautiful spring weather, she dragged me out shopping with her to help ease my recent tension.
