Chapter 493
But Mason didn’t seem to feel any pain. He merely continued begging and knocking his head against the ground.

“Mr. Irvin only fell for Grace’s trap because I failed to protect him he said. “I let him down! He had saved my whole family. Yet, I caused him to suffer like this. I truly deserve to die a thousand times over!
“I’m begging you, Ms. Quill! Please talk to Mr. Irvin! Please! I’ll willingly be in service to you for life to repay you if you do!”
Mason genuinely believed he was to blame. Hence, he felt especially guilty. If he could give up his own life in exchange for Irvin’s happiness, he would gladly do so.
He was groveling so desperately that it started to scare me.
It wasn’t that I wanted Irvin to die. I just couldn’t bring myself to give him another chance.
Besides, it wasn’t a big deal for me to talk to him and persuade him to keep living. So, I agreed to Mason’s request and told him I would talk to Irvin.
Upon hearing this, Mason exhaled in relief before bowing a few more times. “Thank you, Ms. Quill! Thank you so much!”
For a moment, I didn’t even know what to say as I looked at his blood–covered forehead.
Just then, William showed up.
Mason had just stood up to leave. But when he spotted William, he immediately nodded his head respectfully in greeting. Then, after thanking me once again, he left.
William frowned slightly as he watched Mason go.
“What was that about?” he asked.
Our marriage might have been one of convenience, but we were still about to become husband and wife. I didn’t want him to get the wrong idea.
“He’s Irvin’s assistant,” I explained. “He told me Irvin doesn’t want to live anymore because he had been caught in Grace’s scheme. So he asked me to talk to Irvin.”
William was taken aback. “Irvin doesn’t want to live anymore?”
“Yeah.”
It had never occurred to me that Irvin would lose the will to live because of what had happened. But after seeing the state Mason was in, I could tell it was the truth.
William was still at a loss for words after returning to his senses. He had thought of many reasons why Irvin would want to hand the Hardwell family’s empire to me. But never once did he think it was because Irvin no longer wanted to live.
To someone like William, who barely made it through hell and back, this was simply inconceivable. He couldn’t believe Irvin would give up living over something like this.
William didn’t understand how Irvin’s mind worked. If Irvin really loved me so much that he couldn’t lose me, how could he have done what he did back then?
He had been capable of hurting me so terribly. So, why was he incapable of going on with his life now?
No matter how William turned it over in his head, his brilliant mind just couldn’t understand Irvin’s logic. That being said, he was certain Irvin genuinely didn’t want to live anymore.
Only someone who had completely given up on living would consider giving the Hardwell family’s empire to me.
After a long silence, William looked at me and said, “Irvin really does need someone to give him a good talking to.”
