Lena took a deep breath. As expected, her mother was not going to let this slide, but she still didn’t give up and continued testing her. “So why is it okay for others but not for me?” 

Briana scoffed. “If you’re looking for a man ten years older, are you looking for a husband or another father? And if you want someone younger, they’re not even of legal age yet are you planning to take advantage of them? And what’s with all this talk about uncles or cousins? You want your dad and me to jump into the river?” 

Lena deflated. If she were to really get together with Aaron, they wouldn’t need to jump into a river–their blood pressure would probably be enough to do them in. 

“Lena, have you done something that goes against ethics and morals?” As sharp as ever, her mother quickly turned the tables and started questioning her. 

“What are you talking about? What could I have done? You tell me,” Lena denied with all the confidence she could muster.. 

Briana didn’t believe her. “Really? If you haven’t, why ask me those kinds of questions?” 

Lena quickly tried to backpedal. “It was just a conversation, we were talking, and you always jump to conclusions. I’m not talking to you about it anymore, it always ends in an argument.” 

After saying that, she quickly ended the call and let out a helpless sigh. 

Lena, Lena, just give up already. 

The door to the bedroom was knocked on, and Ron’s voice came through. Giend, I made some late–night snacks. Want to try?” 

“I’m not hungry, thanks,” Lena refused.

It was better to avoid situations where it was just the two of them alone in the house. “Sweet rice dumplings, they’re really delicious,” Ron knew how to tempt her. 

Lena had spent the entire day anxious and on edge, barely eating. She hadn’t felt hungry at first, but after his words, she realized she was indeed a little hungry. 

“I’ve left them on the table outside, but they taste best when they’re hot,” Ron said, 

then left.

She was a regular guest in this place now, so she couldn’t be too fussy. Otherwise, she’d be the one at a disadvantage. 

Lena opened the door and walked over casually, glancing at the rice dumplings on the table. “Mr. Shane, you seem to be quite talented.” 

“Definitely the best husband material,” he said, unabashedly promoting himself. 

“A good husband isn’t just someone who can cook,” Lena said, taking a bite. She hadn’t even finished eating when her phone rang–it was her mom. 

Seeing the number, Lena nearly slapped herself in frustration. It felt like poking a hornet’s nest, but she couldn’t ignore the call. “Mom.” 

“Lil‘ Lena, you better be honest with me. Is there something going on between you and Aaron? Is that why he wants to cut ties with the Ace family?” Briana, ever the sharp one, had figured it out. 

Lena’s scalp tingled. She wanted to slap herself. How could she have tried testing her mom like that?
