" I'm so sorry, I got here as quickly as I could. " Jen tells me as she and her coworkers burst into the bedroom and rush to my side to check up on my wellbeing, making sure everything is as it should be, before moving to then check how dilated I am after hours of contractions.
My body already feels exhausted despite not having even started to push yet, so when I hear Jen announce that the time is getting close, I can't help but be relieved.
True to her word, fifteen minutes later, Jen tells me I'm ready to start delivering my child into the world. Kai stands beside me, holding my hand tightly and doing his best to whisper soothing words to me as I start the process of pushing.
The process feels like it takes years, my hair is damp with sweat, my body is weak and exhausted and the pain has me on the brink of defeated tears, until I finally I hear the loud wailing cries from my child and Jen say; " It's a healthy little boy! Congratulations. Would dad like to cut the cord? "
My body falls slack as I watch Kai nearly stumble toward where Jen is holding our tiny baby, his eyes are wide as he looks at him, only drifting away when he's giving the scissors and shown exactly where to cut.
Kai comes up next to me, as Jen wanders off with my son. Kai pushes my hair away from my face softly and plants a kiss on the top of my head. " I guess we argued about girls name for no reason then. " he chuckles.
" I guess so. " I tell him weakly. " Where's the baby? "
" Jen is just getting him cleaned up, he'll be with you in just a minute my darling. You did so great. " He whispers to me, running his hand through my sweaty hair repeatedly.
After what feels like forever, a nurse walks over to me holding my son wrapped in a little blue blanket with a white cotton hand on his head, she gives me a warm smile as she places his small body into my arms carefully.
The nurse mumbles a wish of congratulations then wanders off, leaving the three of us in our own little bubble. As I look down at my son's face, I can't seem to pry my eyes away, as a burst of completely joy and unconditional love courses through my body.
" Hello my little man. " I mumble to him, softly running my thumb against his cheek. " I'm your mama. "
" What should we name him? " Kai whispers, no doubt just as entranced by our child as I am.
" How does Elias sound? " I mutter, a smile making its way to my face as my son lets out a soft yawn.
" Elias... I like it. " Kai tells me.
" You want to hold him? " I ask, for the first time removing my eyes from Elias to look up at Kai.
A nervous look crosses his face, but he sends me a smile regardless, taking a seat on the bed next to me and holding out it arms, I gently pass Elias to him, reminding him softly to support the babies head.
