Sunny, standing nearby, seemed to sense the tension between them. He looked at them and then turned his attention back to his own activities.

Audrey sighed, softened her tone, and asked, "Miles, I'm your sister. You need to tell me the truth so I can help you."

Hearing this, Miles instinctively glanced toward the kitchen.

After ensuring Jessica couldn't hear him, he lowered his gaze and said in a low, husky voice, "Audrey, I failed the exam on purpose because I don't want to go to college."

"Why don't you want to go to college?" asked Audrey.

Miles pondered for ages, struggled to come up with an excuse, and finally just fell silent.

Teenagers were always fragile and sensitive. Though he didn't express it, he held a measure in his heart.

He knew his parents had high expectations for him, but his mom was seriously ill, and his brother was disabled.

If he went to college, all the family pressure would fall solely on his dad.

His dad was getting older, and if he kept driving overtime, he'd eventually wear himself out.

But he didn't dare tell them he wanted to drop out. He had to wait for his SAT results to be poor.

Miles pressed his lips together and pleaded firmly, "Audrey, can you not tell Mom and Dad yet? If they find out now, they'll do whatever it takes to keep me in school. I don't want them to sacrifice everything for an uncertain future!"

Audrey felt a pang of sorrow upon hearing his words.

Although she didn't agree with his decision, she could understand he meant well.
