A woman grabs me out of bed and drags me out of the house, where the whole community is in utter chaos. Bipeds and wolves alike are running around, some wounded, some down on the ground, and very, very still. People are screaming. The air is hard to breathe because it's thick with smoke and fear. I look up to see the Luna's house on fire.
"We have to run," the woman tells me. She puts her finger over her lips as a signal for me to be quiet. I nod and quickly follow her. I look around, scanning my immediate area for my uncle and cousins, but there are just too many bodies running around and slamming into me and stepping on my bare feet. What's going on? Are we under attack?
I find the woman again up ahead, but she's fighting with another woman who is halfway into her wolf form. She looks over her shoulder at me. "Melody, hide!"
The female takes advantage of her momentary distraction and smashes her fist into my savior's face. I lower myself to the ground and roll to a nearby bush where I hide as the woman had ordered. I peek through the leaves and branches, trying to spot her and find her on top of the female who had attacked her. And she was punching the female over and over. A surge of pride for her goes through me and I'm tempted to cheer for her, but she told me to be quiet.
Neither of us notice the man in black sneaking up behind her until it's too late. He swings the sword in his hands and the woman's head flies and lands right in front of me.
I open my mouth and release the shriek building up in my chest. All around me, the glass in all the windows of all the houses surrounding me break and explode outward, but I don't stop screaming.
"Melody."
A sharp slap across my face wakes me up and I come upon the terrified expression of my cousin Roger. His hands are wrapped around my shoulders, and he seems to be in the middle of shaking me.
"Oh, shit, what the fuck?" he yelled into my face. "What did you do?"
"I don't know, I don't know." The terror that accompanied my dream still clings to me and I'm having a hard time breathing. I give my cousin a slight push to get him away from me and he ends up on the floor. "What the fuck?"
My bedroom door bursts open and my Uncle Alfred and Aunt Ruffia are suddenly there. My aunt looks at my broken windows and mirrors and covers her mouth.
"Did you do this?" she screams at me. "Did you do all this?"
"How?" I demand. "I can barely open a jar of peanut butter!"
My cousin Roger is on the floor, clutching his chest and coughing. My aunt scrambles to pick him up to check him over. My uncle pushes them both aside, so he could get into my room and stand at the foot of my bed.
"What is the meaning of this, Melody? How did you cause all of this?"
I point to all the broken glass. "You think I'm the reason for that?"
My female cousins rush into the room in their cute little Victoria's Secret pajamas. Bethany is crying because she's got blood coming out of her nose and ears.
"Momma," she says to my Aunt Ruffia, throwing herself into her arms. "I heard her in my brain."
