Chapter 151
It was all the conviction the little girl needed. “Well… mum is hardly home. Sometimes, she comes late at night. And when she’s home, she’s mostly playing games with her friends. She doesn’t really have time for me and Asher. So, most of our offences go unnoticed.”
“Oh… Does she have a job that makes her work at night?”
Aura shook her head. “Mummy doesn’t have a job at all.”
Sylvie’s mouth dropped open in shock. What?
“But how… how’s that possible?” Her forehead crinkled in a frown
‘Oh, God‘ she exclaimed in her head. That would explain why the kids were always looking this way. They weren’t well taken
care of.
“How does she make her money, then? Do you guys feed properly at home? Or do you have a relative that assists you?”
Again, Aura shook her head. “Mummy only has friends, no relatives. But there’s a woman that always visits with supplies and money. That is how we eat.”
Perhaps, a relative.
But Sylvie was upset. Why did they have to depend on someone else to eat? Why couldn’t the mother find something doing rather than spending baseless time with friends? And considering the fact that she stayed out late, Sylvie didn’t want to imagine what she must be out doing.
A terrifying thought settled in her heart.
She looked at Aura intently as she asked. “Does she…hurt you?”
Thankfully, Aura shook her head again. “She doesn’t have the time to notice when we do something wrong.”
Sylvie took a deep breath of relief. Thank goodness.
But that also meant they were being neglected. Could they even talk to her when they had issues? This lady didn’t even care enough to come pick them early from school. Everyday, they had to be the last to leave.
Now, Sylvie was pissed. She really needed to talk to her.
She turned to Asher. “Asher, could you tell me why you stopped talking? Did something get you scared?”
Fear flickered across his eyes, startling Sylvie.
He lowered his gaze, his legs no longer swinging
God. Something was definitely wrong.
Sylvie reached for his hand, giving it a little squeeze. “You don’t have to tell me now. But soon, you’ll be comfortable enough to tell me. Right?”
He bobbed without looking at her.
It’d be so wrong for him to grow this way. The kids didn’t seem like they were having the best life.
Her heart clenched at the thought of her own twins and how perfect their lives would’ve been if things didn’t happen the way they did.

If she and Kage had still beep together, still in love, and the twins had survived, they’d have been so loved.
“Did you know that man from yesterday?” Aura asked, and Sylvie knew she hss was referring to Kage.
Her heart sank deeper. “Yes.”
“Was he someone that hurt you in the past? You looked sad when you saw him.”
Sylvie was amused by how observant she was. She forced a smile.
“Actually, we used to know each other but stopped being friends due to some… circumstances. Let’s not talk about him, okay?”

They spent some more time together. But along the line, Sylvie got a call and had to go. But not without assuring them she’d be back the following day and have a talk with their mum.
Returning home in the evening, Sylvie met her grandfather who reminded her of the dinner and told her to get ready.
She was exhausted and wished she could get some rest, but Galen wasn’t one to be disobeyed.
In thirty minutes, she was dressed in a short white dress with black heels, looking all set. Then, she left with Galen.
After a thirty–five minutes drive, they drove into a mansion.
“Where are we?” Sylvie looked at Galen as she asked, seated in the backseat with him.
“You’ll see, dear.”
They stepped out of the car when it stopped and made their way into the house, two maids already being out to lead them in. It wasn’t until they went in and found a couple in the living room that Sylvie finally understood where they were.
Mr. Harry and his wife. Mr. Harry–the owner of Timeless Tale. Machai’s father.
Oh, so these were who they were having dinner with.
But her grandfather should’ve told her, then. Sylvie didn’t see a reason to hide it.
“Cheng!”
The couple stood up to welcome them. Sylvie greeted them politely, smiling when the woman pulled her into her arms.
“My God. You’re so beautiful,” she remarked, staring intently at Sylvie’s face.
“Thank you ma’am.”
They joked around it until the couple led them to the dining which was already set with lavish meals.
“My son will be joining us soon,” Mrs. Harry said.
Oh. Machai would be joining them?
“Already here.” His deep, rich voice filled the room.
Sylvie’s legs wobbled, and she felt lucky she was always seated before he showed up.
Like always, that uneasy feeling inched down her spine. That feeling of impending doom around this man.

“Ah, thank goodness!” Mrs. Harry said with relief.
Machai’s eyes were warm as they looked at Sylvie. “Hi, Sylvic. How you doing?”
“I’m… I’m good.”
Seriously. Why did she have to stutter?
She lowered her gaze, preferring to look at her
meal which was being served by one of the maids.
Now that they were all complete at the table, Sylvie
that something didn’t feel right.
She was having dinner with Mr. Harry and his family, and her grandfather had kept it a secret from her. She was having dinner with Mr. Harry and his family, and
Why did something feel off about this?
The dinner went well with the family bringing up light–conversations, although Syivie hardly joined in them.
She could feel Machai’s gaze on her most of the time, and even though he was smiling, it still unsettled her.
Oh, Machai. Creepy Machai.
“Cheng, why don’t we tell her now?” Mr. Harry suddenly said.
Sylvie stopped chewing midway to glance up at them, her eyes sliding between the two men. Tell her what now?
“Oh, that’s true.” Galen shifted in his seat.

For a moment, he seemed uncomfortable before he turned to Sylvie. “Dear, I got to understand that you and Machai have gotten a little friendly.”
Friendly? Sylvie was tempted to correct him. Machai had only given he a ride home, just one time. She really wouldn’t say they were friends, even if it was obvious he’s been trying to make it that way between them.
“He came to me with a proposal. He’d like for you two to get married.”
Her eyes stretched in shock, her jaw dropped to the floor, and for a moment, she felt like she lost the ability to comprehend, because she refused to grasp the meaning of the words her grandfather had just said.
“What?” She mouthed before she could stop herself.
Machai’s smile widened, delight dancing in his eyes.
“He said he’s willing to take it slow, dear.” Mrs. Harry added, as if to placate the issue. “Our son perfectly understands how difficult your love life has been and is ready to go slow with the whole process.”
“And that son being present in person,“Machai chimed in. “I just want to let you know that this is going to be completely safe and fun.”
Fun. Like it was a game?
How could they just do this over dinner? She didn’t even know she was having dinner with the Harrys! Was she about to become a tool again?.
She glanced at Galen who was wearing a forced smile. No. Something was definitely not right. Sylvie could feel it deep in her bones.
“This is a proposal, right?” She turned to Machai. “I get to think about it and refuse if I’m not pleased. Right?”

Chapter 151
The smile on Machai’s face vanished so instantly, Syivic felt it had only been a facade this whole time. His eyeesd darkened. “It’s not as flexible as you think.”
Her brows furrowed. “What do you mean?”
“I mean, you get to think about it, yes. But I don’t think it’s an offer you should turn down, Sylvie. You might not be able to fully turn it down.”
“Oh… You sound like I’m being coerced into this.”
“Not exactly. A lovely girl like you can’t be coerced into anything now, can she?”
He rose from his seat. “Come walk with me.”
Going round to her own side of the table, he held out his hand for her, and hesitantly, Sylvie placed her hand in it.
Holding him, she couldn’t help feeling more dread. She didn’t like this. Not one bit.
He led her out of the house, and as soon as they were away from their family’s scrutiny, she withdrew her hand from his.
“What is going on?” She demanded, facing him. Did you really suggest this? I’m your friend’s ex!”
“And how’s that a reason for me not to want you?”
Want you? Sylvie couldn’t believe it. He wanted her?
F
“I–I don’t want this.” She shook her head. “Really, Machai. I just didn’t want to say anything in there in the presence of our families. You’re a nice guy and all, but I can’t be with anyone right now.”
“I understand why you might think so. But give it sometime, Sylvie. I promise you’ll love this.”
She looked at him like he’d lost his mind. She paced a few steps away before turning to face him again. “Why me? We’ve only known each other for less than a month now. Forgive me if I think this feels a little off.”
He reached out to hold her hand. “You’re one very pretty woman, Sylvie. I’ve known and liked you for years, even when you belonged to Kage. You could say you’re the one with the knowing problem.”
He started walking leisurely with her. “But even that won’t be a problem once you open your heart to it. Like my mum said, I’m willing to take this slow. We’ll get to know each other before…” He winked at her.
Sylvie shuddered. No. There was something off about this man. Yes he was mostly smiling and seemed nice, but her instincts told her there was another side of him that he kept hidden from others.
The rest of the walk, she hardly said a word. Machai insisted they could start up as friends before leading to the marriage, but Sylvie had the conviction that he might be needing more than just friendship in this early stage of their…she didn’t even know what to call it. But there was no way she was going through with it. She wasn’t ready for another relationship and was not going to let herself be used again. Most especially, by a friend of Kage.
