I froze.

"He's very old, and this situation isn't entirely your fault; it's partly mine as well. Dr. Ranford, I believed that with your strong medical ethics and skills, you would've been able to safely discharge the patient. But it seems that I trusted you too much."

Dr. Grey shook his head. "To avoid further emotional distress for the family that could worsen the situation, I'm suspending you immediately."

Noticing the redness in my eyes, his expression hardened. "Don't make this any harder for the hospital, Dr. Ranford."

I let out a deep breath. "You just want me gone, don't you? Fine. I'll leave."

I had spent the past few days conducting thorough research and reviewing the elderly man's medical records. I was confident that the medication I prescribed wouldn't have caused any issues.

The CT scan results on my computer clearly showed that the brain hemorrhage was almost resolved, and he should have been able to be discharged. Yet despite all this, the unexpected occurred.

As I met Dr. Grey's cold stare, the truth suddenly hit me—I was responsible for the elderly man's death. If I hadn't been so stubborn and insistent, this accident might never have happened.

I lowered my head and walked into Dr. Crowell's office.

He released the secretary from his embrace and looked at me coldly. "Dr. Ranford, even if you're here to beg for mercy, it won't help. This situation is too serious. I can't keep you."

I shook my head. "I'm not here to beg."

Dr. Crowell raised an eyebrow. "Then what? Are you trying to use your connections?"

I pressed my lips together and, after a moment of silence, let out a deep breath. "I'm resigning."

Ever since I didn't choose Dr. Crowell's father-in-law last time, he had been holding a grudge against me. The series of events that followed made it clear that even if I stayed, his prejudice would never fade. Instead, he would only make things harder for me.
