I listened to their conversation, I tried to knock on the door, but I notice my hand won't stop shaking.
My heart plummeted into despair.
It's supposed to be a hot summer day, but I found myself trapped in a ice cavern.
Days and nights, for the past five years, I've been thinking about stepping into this door.
I thought I was inches away from a place called home, but realized I was standing at the edge of a cliff.
Time seems to have frozen.
I always knew he's their favorite, but he's my little brother, I could never watch him suffer.
And I thought the feeling was mutual, he's still that little brother who would always have my back.
So I knocked on the door.
After a short silence, mom opened up the door, acting surprised at me: "Oh Dannie, I didn't expect you to come home so early, dad was gonna go pick you up."
Mom checked me up and down, she seemed sad, or at least she pretended to be, and she said: "Oh, my baby... look at you, you've become so skinny..."
Sometimes I wished I never heard their conversation, so I would think she actually meant it, how nice would that be...
With a hint of bitterness, I said to her: "Hey, at least I saved dad some gas."
Then I stepped inside.
But I saw my sister-in-law walking toward me, next thing I knew, she sprayed alcohol all over me.
"Don't overthink it, it's just a welcome ritual, family tradition."
She might be joking, but she had no intention of hiding that look of disgust.
She was treating me like I was an actual criminal.
But she might have forgotten,
I served time in jail for my brother and her.
Without saying a word, I walked straight to my room.
"Don't bother, there is no place for you in this house."
As I walked to my room, dad finally spoke.
I turned around, saw him sitting on the couch, smoking, the astray in front of him is filled with cigarette butts.
It seemed like my return made the old man start smoking again.
I stopped, and said: "Dad, I was just in the prison for my years, I'm not dead, I can't even go to my room now?"
He snuffed out the cigarette butt, leaned back against the couch, and said:
"Nothing personal, son, the house is just too small for these many people."
I didn't say anything, but turned to the side and ask:
"Where is Ethan? Let me talk to him."
Ethan walked out of the bathroom, looking awkward.
"Long time no see, Dannie. But you know, Cathy is three-months pregnant, if you come back, the house might be a bit too crowded... But you are my big brother, if you wanna move back, I''ll clean out the baby's room for you."
He's still the little brother I remembered.
So I nodded, and said.
"Good, there's still 7 months, I'm just gonna stay here for a while."
Then I noticed his expression shifted, he went rigid upon hearing what I said.
I saw his lips moving, but no words came out of his mouth.
Cathy, on the other hand, started ranting at me.
"How selfish are you? Can't you see how crowded this place is? And you are trying to take the room from an unborn child? Shame on you!"
Deep down, I knew I was furious, but somehow I started laughing, I looked at her and said:
"I don't recall the house being this crowded when I left, and your child is not even born yet, why can't I live in this room? Oh, and don't forget, I paid for this house."
Pops slammed the table and barked out.
"Daniel Harrison! Watch your tongue! You were locked up, for christ's sake! How dare you ask to get the house back?"
I said to him disappointedly: "When did I ever ask to get the house back? All I ever wanted was just a room to stay..."
"Like I said, there's no place for you here, if you need a place to stay, go rent an apartment or something, we don't owe you jack shit!" He said.
His face was as twisted as a Shar-Pei.
God knows how he made everything sound so simple, as if the 5 years I did for him was like letting him carve the turkey in Thanksgiving.
The five years of my life, was concluded in a "thank you".
And my dad still hadn't given up defending my little brother, he yelled at the top of his lungs:
"You're the older brother! Aren't you ashamed to ask for credits for everything single thing you did for your brother?"
"Exactly! You're a fucking criminal, not Ethan. What is my baby gonna do if you just stay here and live off your family?" Cathy rubs her belly and says.
I looked to my mom, the last person I'd hope to have just a tiny bit of sympathy in me. But she looked at me seriously, and said:
"Dannie, we wish nothing but safe and healthy for our grandchild, you're a grown man, it's only right if you move out, for the best of this family."
Their words pierced my heart like knives.
Even knowing that there's no hope left for this family any more, tears still filled up my eyes.
I looked at them, said in a hoarse voice: "No wonder none of you ever paid me a visit. I thought you were just busy, turns out you were just ashamed of me."
I raised my head up, holds back my tears, and spoke to everyone in the room, word by word:
"I've only got one question, do you guys insist of kicking me out?"
Without any hesitation, pops spoke: "Yes!"
And soon after, the rest of the family agreed with a nod.
Just by looking at them, I could not even see any emotion in their eyes.
So I nodded, and said:
"Great, if you said so. From now on, I'm no longer a part of this family-"
I turned around.
"- And I hope you guys won't regret this."
How foolish of me, I was going to share the two-hundred-million dollars with them, but they could kiss that money goodbye.
I stepped out of the house, didn't even look back.
As I walked out, I could still hear Cathy's annoying voice:
"Who do you think you are? Why would we ever regret to kick a criminal out? What we would regret is to let you live off this family!"
