"You mean, your boyfriend?" one teased, while another younger aunt smiled amicably and remarked, "He's actually quite a match with our Lexie. I bet he's here to meet the family!"

Lexie quickly cut off the chatter. "He's here on business this time. Why don't you guys get us something to eat? We still need to head back to the village and check in with Uncle Dalton."

Brady raised an eyebrow. "Not staying the night? That's a shame. I wanted to show you the new urns we've made. We mixed in soil from behind the mountain, and the quality is chef's kiss."

Lexie had to go back and forth a bit before she and Mike finally sat down to eat, surrounded by half the household.

As for Mike, he had never eaten a meal while being watched by so many people. The food tasted like ash in his mouth—not because it was bad, but because of the pressure.

Mike sat quietly, taking it all in. When he looked at Lexie again, his gaze was different. He had thought she was just another ordinary working stiff like him.
