They were in the hospital ward.
After the lights went out, Verian laid in Heaton's arms. Sniffing the tobacco scent lingering on his body with her arms circling his neck, she murmured, "Don't smoke too much in the future. It's not good for your health."
Back then, James often smoked whenever he encountered problems in his business, causing him to cough all the time. Because of that, Verian often made him snow pear juice. "I'll make some snow pear juice for you and Little Jelly Bean after I’m discharged."
Heaton hugged her and hummed softly without much emotion.
Verian opened her dewy eyes and looked at Heaton. She then said, "You've been acting all weird after meeting your uncle yesterday evening.”
“Is the Fudd Group in some sort of crisis?”
Didn't Fudd Group’s crisis resolve itself after Heaton came back?
Heaton stretched out his hand and covered Verian's eyes. She blinked several times, her long lashes brushing against his palms and tickling him. He lowered his head and kissed her temple. Then, he said in his hoarse voice, "Sleep."
"Good night."
Verian lifted her head slightly and kissed his chin. After that, she leaned against his arms and peacefully closed her eyes.
Heaton lowered his eyes as he gazed at the person in his arms, her breathing steadying.
He looked at her brows, eyes, nose, and lips carefully, trying to deny the fact that she was his uncle’s daughter through her looks. However, the more he looked at her, the more he noticed the slight resemblance between them.
Heaton's eyes trembled. He closed his eyes and tighten his embrace of her.
No matter whose daughter she was, he would not let her go.
The next morning, Heaton went out of the ward to call James while Verian was still asleep.
“Heaton?” James was surprised to receive Heaton's call.
"Uncle, I don't think Rainie's blood type is enough to prove that she’s your daughter."
James sighed, "I've once collected a few strands of her hair because I suspected her identity. However, I did not send it for a DNA test because I wanted to keep this a secret until the very end. If you want to see the test results however, I can do the test to prove it. I'm sorry, Heaton. I never thought that mine and Jolin’s daughter would become your wife."
Heaton pursed his lips and said, "Uncle, I hope you can keep your promise. You must never tell anybody about Rainie's background, including Rainie herself."
Heaton immediately hung up after he was done talking.
James clutched his phone, sighing. He was holding onto an envelope that contained Verian's hair sample. After contemplating for a long time, he decided to call Lain.
The Heidy family and the Fudd family were close family friends. Besides that, Lain was a trustworthy person. James was afraid that the matter would be exposed if he were to approach other doctors. That was why the first person who came to his mind when he wanted to seek help was Lain.
The call went through and Lain’s polite voice could be heard from the other side of the phone, "Uncle, I haven't seen you in a long time. Why did you call me all of a sudden?"
"Lain, I need you to do me a favor."
They were in a secluded private room in a tea house.
James and Lain were sitting facing one another.
James dismissed all the waiters in the room. He lifted the teapot and was about to pour Lain a cup of tea. Lain immediately received it with her teacup as she said with a faint smile on her face, "Uncle, I'll help myself. It’s a little too much honor to have you pour me a cup of tea.”
"It's not a big deal."
Lain asked, "Uncle, may I know what's your reason for meeting me today? Are you feeling depressed lately?"
James replied, "Do you remember me telling you that I had a first love before I met Janny’s mother?"
Lain nodded her head. "Yes, I remember. You said that you couldn’t forget her and she holds a special place in your heart. You've always felt guilty about her. Did she appear recently?"
James shook his head and said in a sad tone, "She’s already passed away."
"I'm sorry to hear that, uncle."
