It was already eight at night when Verian received Old Master Fudd's fax message.
The next morning, she got another call from the old master. After that, she sat by the window for more than ten hours; she did not even eat or drink during that period.
The fax machine finally beeped before she took two copies of the divorce agreement from its tray.
She caressed Heaton's signature gently as tears streamed down her cheeks and dropped onto the signature, smudging the ink.
She placed the divorce papers on her lap. It had been a long while since then, but still, she did not sign the papers.
After she found out about her relationship to Heaton, she had already made mental preparations for a divorce. However, she did not expect Heaton would sign the papers so quickly; she could not bring herself to do the same.
It had only been a few months after their marriage, but she felt as if she had experienced dating and growing old with Heaton within that short period.
It snowed that night in Florence.
She looked at the scene through the window, and her mind flitted back to the moment when Heaton Fudd gave her a piggyback ride during one of the snowy days in North City.
It was as if the beautiful scenario had replayed itself right in front of her eyes. Yet, how did their marriage end so quickly?
…
It was 2 a.m. in North City.
"Have you checked the old master's fax address?"
"Not at the moment but I should be able to get it soon."
Kush focused his attention on the algorithms, and he had stayed up late the whole night to find the IP address of that fax.
Heaton stood by the French window in the study room. It looked like it had snowed again.
It had snowed, and the weather was cold. He wondered about the place where Riana was; was it as cold as North City?
Heaton had a glass of brandy and he felt a little tipsy, but his mood was slightly better.
He found many of Verian's drawings from the bookshelf, and one of them was his portrait.
It was a drawing of him with his framed glasses on as he worked at the desk.
She even drew herself into the drawing. She had sat opposite him as she laid on the desk with her eyes fixated on him and a drawing pen in her hand. The picture looked calm and heart-warming.
That drawing… When did she draw it? He did not have any idea about that.
Heaton tidied the drawings, and as he placed them back onto the bookshelf, a travelogue fell off from it.
He frowned as he crouched to pick up the book 'Dusk in Florence'. A few papers slipped out of the book.
As Heaton picked up the papers and reinserted them randomly in between the pages, he noticed a few words written behind them. It looked like a formula to calculate distance.
His eyes gleamed as he studied the calculations.
That was the distance from North City to Florence!
The book was about the people and scenery in Florence. However, it was Verian's handwriting on the papers while Riana was the one in Florence.
Heaton furrowed his brows in concentration. Then he anxiously checked the other memos and found a sentence at the back of each one.
"Heaton, will you go to Florence to find me?" the note said.
Heaton's eyes gleamed in excitement. He turned around and quickly strode out of the study room.
As he walked out of the house, he called Kush. "Get me on the earliest flight to Florence!"
"Florence? Is Mrs Fudd…"
One of the algorithms managed to locate the address, and Kush's worker informed him. "Found it. The fax message was sent to Florence City. However, we need more time to figure out the exact location."
Kush heaved a sigh of relief. Then he got back to Heaton. "Boss, Mrs Fudd is really in Florence. I will get you on the next earliest flight."
…
Heaton drove a black Spyker as he sped down the road in the dark night.
