She did not answer him, but he could see her cheeks flush in the dim light.
"Surely you know it is dangerous for a young lass to be out in the dead of night alone with God knows what lurking about," he chastised.
"I can defend myself," She said with a sharp retort.
Amused he stood tall crossing his arms in front of his chest.
Immediately his stature somehow unnerved her. She felt tiny before him. Wait a minute. she was tiny before him, he was very tall and muscular. very intimidating.
"Oh! You don't say?" He chuckled.
Her Eyes flashed as she pressed her lips together at his mocking laugh.
"I can too, defend myself sir," She insisted with a defiant glare. Tilting her chin up .
Before she knew it, he grabbed her and turned her around with a tight grip on her waist. She began to kick and pull at his arms. Her struggles never made him flinch.
"Let me go!" She demanded breathing hard.
Terror gripped at her heart. She never saw his move. Anger built inside her, that she fought back.
"I thought you could defend yourself?" He gave a teasing laugh.
"Let me go or I will scream," She threatened. Knowing full well she will be in trouble regardless for being out alone at this hour.
Struggling she kicked and he easily let her go. Turning she looked at him huffing and breathing hard. And a disturbing feeling came over him. She slid her knife from the sheath at her belt. He drew back when he caught the gleam of her blade.
She lunged forward cutting thin air where his chest was as he jumped back. without hesitating, he grabbed her wrist and yanked the blade from her hand. Fighting to reach his tall stance and grab it from his hand she begged for it back.
"It is my mother's." She cried out.
It unsettled her that he made her cry. No one has ever made her cry and it angered her.
Feeling she would no longer threaten him with it he gave it back to her.
He held it out to her, she hesitated eyeing him then the dagger.Quickly she reached for it and held it close to her in a possesive way. Putting it back in the sheath, she slowly turned to walk away.
"Surely you don't think I am going to let you walk back alone?" He said sternly.
Although carrying her kicking and screaming to her chamber would be a very bad idea, it would be his only option if she refused.

Slowly they walked back up the path to the keep. The young petite girl that walked silently at his side was very different from the one he saw earlier that day. She had confidence in her fight and a manner of pride when she walked off.
It was not what he saw tonight she was a mere fragile child of ten and four, young and naïve. Her low sniffle broke his concentration. He gently pulled her arm and stopped her. Kneeling before her he softly wiped a single tear from her cheek.
"Forgive me, it was not my intention to frighten you in any way." He touched his chest.
