Looking at Cherise, she said, “Last time when you visited the Jarrett residence, things didn’t go as expected, and it got a bit unpleasant. I didn’t get the chance to give this to you before the party ended. 

“I brought it out today specifically to give it to you.” 

With that, she handed the box to Cherise. 

Cherise looked at the red velvet box in Mary’s hands. “This is for me?” 

Things at the Jarrett residence did get a little tense last time, especially with the clash involving Mary’s family. 

It really put Mary in a tough spot. 

Seeing that Cherise didn’t take it, Mary firmly placed the box into her hands. “Just take it. It’s really valuable.” 

Cherise looked at the box Mary had pressed into her hand and couldn’t help but smile as she gently opened it. 

Inside was a longevity lock made of gold, quite exquisite, with four little bells hanging from it. 

“What is this?” Cherise asked, picking up the longevity lock. 

Mary seemed to be lost in thought, with a tinge of sadness in her voice. “I had this longevity lock made before Morris was even born. 

“I had planned for him to wear it right after he was born. 

“Unexpectedly, my–daughter, Morris‘ mother, died from complications during childbirth when he was born. 

“So I’ve kept this longevity lock until now, and never gave it to anyone. 

“Now, I’m giving it to you. After all, it was meant for Morris, and don’t want to see it and be reminded of my poor daughter who passed away too soon.”

About ten minutes later, a group of people were leaving the entrance of Ebb & Flow with shopping bags in hand. 

By now, night had completely fallen. The breeze blowing through the entrance carried a slight chill, typical of late spring transitioning to early summer. 

Compared to the afternoon, the crowd had grown even larger. 

“Cherise, I’m heading back with Grandma Mary. 

“Let’s make an appointment again next time,” Jean said, waving at Cherise as she moved to guide Mary to the car.
