Chapter 556

Morris and Cherise spoke the same familiar name at the same time: “Hank Reese.”

After saying it out loud, Cherise smiled. “That 14–year–old boy truly has a meticulous mind. Jean has been to Charity Orphanage too, but Hank knew Jean is carefree and wouldn’t pay too much attention to a little girl’s appearance.

“So, he chose a girl who always hides in corners and isn’t easily noticed, disguised her, and then had her deliver the letter to Jean, who was acting as my bridesmaid that day.

“Moreover, I’m certain he developed his own signal jammer in secret. Otherwise, with our hacking skills, there’s no way we wouldn’t be able to recover the missing footage from the surveillance video.”

Morris completely agreed with Cherise’s logic.

Tapping his fingers rhythmically on the table, he said, “After all, he is the son of a politician–naturally, he’s not ordinary. Besides, if my guess is correct, Hank is very likely your half–brother.”

Cherise had thought about this as well. Just as Morris said, if the letter came from Hank, then he must have some connection to her mother, Claire.

She pondered whether the relationship between Hank and Claire was truly what she and Morris suspected. If it was, then that would mean she and Hank were siblings.

The realization made Cherise take a sharp breath. “I never expected something this complicated to happen to me. If he really is my brother, then I’ll have to rethink so many things from the past.”

Morris nodded and handed her a glass of water. “That’s right. A lot of things may need to be reconsidered. But one thing I can be sure of–Betrico won’t be peaceful for much longer.

“After all, the people involved in this are far from ordinary. And many are watching closely, waiting for their chance.”

After taking a sip of water, Cherise said, “That’s true. When I return to Betrico University tomorrow, I’ll have to confront Hank about this. If everything is exactly as we suspect, I need to know what my mother has been doing all these years.”

The next day, Cherise’s wedding leave had officially ended. After breakfast, she prepared to head to Betrico University to teach her class.

The students in the Traditional Medicine Department were well aware that Cherise would be returning today. Many of them had gotten up early, eager to arrive at the classroom ahead of time to wait for her.

Hank was no exception. After saying goodbye to Maeve and the children at the orphanage, he set off for Betrico University as usual, riding his bicycle.

The road from the orphanage to Betrico University had always been eerily quiet–so quiet, in fact, that it could almost be described as desolate.

Perhaps Hank had long grown accustomed to such silence. As he pedaled, he even hummed a little tune. He looked completely at ease, seemingly unaware that Cherise and Morris had already uncovered many truths.

many other students, he was eager to get to campus quickly so he could see Cherise–the professor he admired the

However, in the very next second, Hank’s instincts kicked in. A wave of unease washed over him as he sensed an approaching danger.

Just as he was about to speed up and get out of there, a large group of men dressed in black, all highly trained, swarmed in from all directions.

He could fight, but against so many strong and well–trained individuals, escaping wouldn’t be easy.

Still sitting on his bike, he gripped the handlebars tightly. “Who are you? Why are you here? I’m on my way to class–please step aside.”

Hank tried to move, but the difference in strength was overwhelming. It was clear that these men were highly trained.

Not only that, but there were no surveillance cameras along this stretch of road. This was definitely a premeditated operation.

The realization sparked a hint of curiosity in Hank. His only option now was to follow them for the time being and wait for the right moment to escape. He hoped Cherise would notice something was off when he didn’t show up for class.

The leader of the group noticed Hank lost in thought and said coldly, “I suggest you cooperate.”

Hank looked up at him, wearing an expression of fear and panic. “A–alright, I’ll go with you. Just don’t drag me.”

Even as he spoke, one of the men had already taken his phone, backpack, and other belongings, tossing them onto the ground.

The leader glanced at the discarded items. “That’s all he had on him? Nothing else?”

“No, Sir. That’s everything,” one of the men replied.

The leader nodded. “Good. Leave the stuff. Take the boy.”

As he was taken away, Hank shouted, “Hey! My phone and my backpack! I’m already broke–this just makes things worse! What kind of kidnappers take people but not their stuff? And you’re even targeting a kid!”

Soon, the area was completely deserted. All that remained was an old, battered phone and a well–worn backpack, which was mended multiple times.
