Morris wasn’t unaware, but he was momentarily stunned.

He reached for the pregnancy test that Cherise had placed on the desk and stared at the two bright red lines displayed on it. He hadn’t expected such a surprise so soon after their wedding, and for a moment, he didn’t know how to react.

He took Cherise’s hand, who was sitting beside him. “Cherise, is this real? Am I seeing things?”

Cherise, unable to hold back a laugh, smiled beautifully and looked into Morris’s eyes. “It’s real. If my calculations are correct, it should have happened during that trip to the island. So, you and I, Morris, are about to become parents.”

Before Cherise could finish speaking, Morris pulled her into his arms.

The three Sanchez brothers, who were present, quickly grabbed the thermal food containers and left the office, giving the couple some privacy.

Once they were alone, Morris’s gestures became more relaxed. He carefully placed his hand on her small belly. “So, is there a little life here that belongs to both of us?”

“Yes. Our little baby,” Cherise answered easily.

“Can I hear anything now? Does she hear me when I talk? How should I communicate with her?

“You’re so young, is it too hard for you to carry our child for ten months? Will there be morning sickness? What should I do? What do you want to eat? Do you want something spicy or sour?”

Morris was obviously happy, but since he had no experience, everything felt tentative. His questions came quickly and almost too many.

Cherise, watching his little movements and hearing his endless questions, couldn’t help but laugh behind her hand.

She cupped his face with both hands, almost kneeling down in front of him. “Morris, relax, okay? The baby is still very small, just an embryo right now. She can’t hear anything, and she definitely doesn’t understand.

“In a few days, we’ll need to do an ultrasound, and we should be able to see a rough outline then. I’m really looking forward to it.”

After hearing this, Morris stood up again, pulling Cherise into his arms, kissing her forehead, the space between her eyebrows, her eyes, her nose, and finally her lips.

He then spoke softly, “Thank you, Cherise. Thank you for carrying our child, for giving me a baby. When our daughter is born, I’ll teach her to love you, and I’ll tell her that her mother is the most wonderful person in the world.”

“How do you know it’s a girl?” Cherise, smiling, asked after Morris finished speaking.

Still holding her, Morris replied, “Because you’ve said you like girls.”

Cherise, smiling, nodded. “I do like girls, but now that I think about it, I’d love any child I have, no matter the gender.”

Morris touched his nose to hers, letting out a light laugh. “Alright, I’ll listen to you, as long as it’s ours, it’s perfect.”
