Chapter 116 

The quiet of the emergency corridor was abruptly broken by the gentle echo of a ringing phone, catching Mayra completely off guard. 

Just outside the door, Anderson heard the sound and glanced in its direction. 

Mayra’s legs had gone numb, leaving her legs weak. The phone stopped ringing, but with each approaching footstep, her heart raced faster. 

A dark figure approached the petite form cowering in the corner. 

Anderson went down on one knee and pondered reaching out to stroke Mayra’s hair. His gaze was deep and contemplative. 

Seeing her nestled within her arms and avoiding his gaze, Anderson felt an unfamiliar unease grip his chest. Unsure of what to do, he withdrew his hand. 

Eventually, Anderson carried Mayra back to the office. Mayra struggled, saying “Let go of me! Get your filthy hands off me! I hate you!” 

Once out of the darkness, Anderson glanced down at Mayra, who was in his embrace. In Mayra’s teary gaze, there was only disgust and resistance toward him, as if she had encountered something disgusting and wanted to avoid it at all costs. 

“Be careful not to stain your new school uniform with tears,” he said. 

Anderson seated her in front of the office desk, where scattered documents lay imprinted with fingerprints. 

“Let go of me! Don’t ever speak to me again. You’re not the brother I know. You’re disgusting!” Only Mayra could utter such blunt words. 

Anderson nonchalantly reached for a tissue to wipe Mayra’s tears, but she immediately bit his wrist. Although the pain hit him, Anderson remained unfazed. 

Mayra avoided his gaze and slowly released her grip. 

“Why did you stop?” Anderson asked. 

Mayra pushed him away, repulsed by the thought of his hands just touching Hailey. She then stood up and headed toward the door. 

Anderson quietly observed Mayra as she angrily left with his legs crossed. Yet, she couldn’t open the door. Anderson had already remotely locked it shut. 

“Let me out.” 

Anderson regarded her with the same look one would give a trapped pet. It wanted to escape but couldn’t. He lazily lit a cigarette. “Tell me, Mayra. What did you see?” 

Setting down the metal lighter, Anderson took a drag and exhaled smoke. 

Turning to face Anderson, Mayra doubted whether he treated her as a sister and genuinely cared for her or if he merely saw her as a pet he kept by his side. 

Anderson had hidden his true nature too well for two lifetimes. She had never seen through him. 

Mayra glared at him. Ignoring his words, she angrily lay down on the couch and covered her ears with a cushion, unwilling to see him or hear his voice. 

At that moment, there was a knock on the office door. 

“Speak!” Anderson demanded. 

“The restaurant has been booked. We can leave anytime,” Shane replied. 

“Hold on.”
