Mayra was sitting under a tree. There was light spilling from the lamp outside the kitchen and a little table. She bent her head and bit the edge of the cup as she sipped the liquid slowly, but her eyelid twitched suddenly. She almost.

Mayra looked at him and continued, “Gordon, you’re closer to me than to her, aren’t you? She hasn’t known you for as long as I have.”

Outside Paramount Hall, a black car was parked. The door of Paramount Hall was ajar, and the interior was visible. Light spilled out. When the man got out of the car, the temperature in the air seemed to drop.

He stepped inside. Through the wall and the curtain that obscured the door, he could hear the sound of a girl laughing. “Gordon, I’ll wash your clothes for you in the future if you’ll cook for me. I like eating the food that you cook.”

She added, “What if I move in next to you? You can teach me homework every day, and I can eat the food you cook. Gordon… if we keep going on like this, I think I’m going to get fat soon.”
