Valerie was just as stunned. Her heart trembled with the terrifying realization.

She gasped silently, ‘Aiden… he knew all along?

‘Since when did he find out?

And why didn’t he ever say a word to me?‘ This was also the first time Valerie realized that Aiden hadn’t married her because of the Clark family’s arrangement – he had married her.

Her thoughts spiraled, ‘How is that even

She thought back to the hellish life she’d endured in her past life and wondered, ‘Was it really not all because of betrayal and lies?

The very idea felt absurd to Valerie. It was utterly ridiculous.

Valerie looked at the woman she’d called “mom” for years, feeling a bitter sense of irony. She gave a soft, mirthless chuckle and said, “What exactly did do, Mrs. Clark?”

She stepped forward, facing Alannah squarely, and spoke each word with icy clarity, “Valentina didn’t like me, so you made me leave – and I did.

“Valentina didn’t want to marry, so you forced me to take her place – and I did.

“The Clark family business was struggling, and you had me go beg him for investment – and I did.

“But have you forgotten? I was adopted when I was thirteen and kicked out when I turned eighteen. Altogether, you raised me for just five years.”

Valerie let out a mocking laugh and looked Alannah/straight in the eye. “I’m grateful for those five years you took care of me. But whatever debt I owed you I’ve already paid it back in full.”

She stared at Alannah’s twisted face and spoke every word with unshakable resolve, each syllable sharp and clear.

Alannah was so overwhelmed by Valerie’s words that she stumbled backward, staring at her in disbelief.

She wondered in shock, “Valerie used to be so soft and pliant when had she ever shown this kind of courage?”
