I wrapped my jacket tighter around me as I walked, trying to appear casual despite the noticeable temperature change. 

It had been wann when I came downstairs, but now a chill had settled in–clearly, the weather here could shift unexpectedly. 

The night was enchanting yet peaceful as I approached the lake where we had agreed to meet. Ethan was already waiting for me. He was clad in a dark trench coat, standing by the water and gazing into the distance. 

His silhouette appeared both lonely and resolute in the night, like a mountain that couldn’t be crossed. 

As I drew closer, a surge of complicated emotions filled me. This once–familiar figure now felt somewhat estranged. 

I didn’t know how to face him or what to say. Ethan seemed to sense my arrival, he turned, smiling at me. It carried a hint of bittemess but also a glimmer of hope. 

“You’re here,” he said softly, his voice trembling slightly.

I took a deep breath, deciding to confront the issue head–on instead of avoiding it any longer. Looking into Ethan’s eyes, I saw a mix of anticipation and nervousness as if he were waiting for an answer he had longed to hear. 

He nodded gently, his voice hoarse. “I want to know.” 

I bit my lip and began recounting my conversation with Natasha. But I made it clear where I stood; I had no intention of becoming a pawn in someone else’s romantic game. 

“So, I’ll be direct–I don’t want to be apart of your games. I don’t want to be dragged into your situation. My feelings for you are separate from yours and hers.” Ilovew he might start a new relationship or have a different perspective after this conversation. Regardless, it was no longer my concem. 

“Natasha wants me to keep my distance from you. We can’t communicate like friends anymore, and this time I just hope to clarify things.” 

Since Grandma’s passing, I had understood that it would be hard for us to return to the past. It wasn’t that I was overly troubled by it; it was just clear to me that he wouldn’t choose me. 

“I don’t have anything with Natasha, and I don’t understand why she said those things.” He looked taken aback, seemingly surprised that Natasha would approach me with such inappropriate comments. 

I just smiled. “Whatever you two have is irrelevant to me; I just want to be myself.” 

I could see his disappointment, yet his eyes betrayed a deep sadness as if this situation weighed heavily on him. 

Who wasn’t familiar with that feeling? Who hadn’t endured the pain time and again? 

“Can’t we go back to how it was? You used to love me so much. Why don’t you feel the same way now? Is it because I didn’t choose you?” 

He gazed at me, contusion and disbelief in his eyes as if he were searching for answers in me. 

I sighed softly and shook my head. 

“We aren’t from the same world. It’s like waiting at a port for a plane to land, Ethan, I’m not an aircraft carrier. I can only be myself, so please don’t make this difficult for me
