After hanging up the phone, it hit me. "Oh no, we're going to stick out like a sore thumb sneaking into a hotel in evening gowns at this time of night. If anyone connects us to the crime scene, we're screwed!"

Madison got the gravity of the situation, too. Her face went pale. "What now? We can't actually avoid calling the police, can we?"

Suddenly, an idea popped into my head. "Alright, here's the plan. First, we ditch these outfits so we don't stand out. Then, we find a spot to lay low and wait for the police, so no one sees us."

Madison nodded.

We rushed to the hotel restroom, changed out of our gowns, and stuffed them into our bags. Then, we grabbed a couple of casual outfits from the hotel gift shop. Only then did we sigh in relief.

"What now?" Madison asked. "We can't just waltz back to the lobby and wait."

I glanced around and spotted a stairwell tucked away in the corner. "Let's hide in there. No one usually goes to places like that."

We rushed into the stairwell, slipped inside, and pressed ourselves against the wall, still shaken.

"I never thought the night would go like this," Madison muttered. "If I'd known, I wouldn't have gone to that stupid charity gala."

"Who could've seen this coming?" I forced a bitter smile. "But this might be tied to Ethan and the others. We need to stay on our toes."

Madison nodded. "Yeah. By the way, how'd you handle that masked person back there? Do you know some kind of fighting skills or something?"

"I've picked up a thing or two," I said with a small laugh, avoiding the details.

"Oh, that makes sense! Guess that's why I couldn't beat you in prison. You fight dirty!" she teased.

I grinned. "And you didn't? You called in a whole bunch of jerks who almost beat me to death!"
