Half an hour later, dinner was ready. Hansel wanted to head up to call his parents down for dinner but before he walked to the stairs, the door opened up.
Mark and Lyla walked out together.
More importantly, the two of them changed into new clothes. Hansel grinned mischievously, he knew what happened at first glance.
However, he pretended to not know and attentively smiled. “Daddy, Mommy, it’s time for dinner.”
“Mhmm.” Mark lazily grunted as he walked down.
He sat down opposite Justin but he treated his father like an invisible man, or non-existent.
Justin did not mind as he did the same to Mark.
Dinner finally started.
Justin was in awe of Hansel’s cooking. “I did not expect a little boy like you to cook and especially this well!”
Hansel grinned in happiness. “Oh, it’s nothing!”
“It’s a lot better than someone! He might not even cook as well as you even in his current age, let alone at your age!” Justin’s strange tone was obviously pointed at Mark.
Mark did not want to give in either. He looked at the man and said, “That’s because he has a good daddy to educate him!”
The argument silenced and almost choked Justin, it was hinting at how poor of a father he was.
Right before Justin could argue back, Hansel stepped in by putting food on Justin’s plate.
“Here, have some of this, and this! They are amazing!”
He tried to stop the father and son from arguing to prevent a war from happening on the dining table.
Justin rolled his eyes white at Mark. “Hmph! I’m not arguing with you today because I’m here for my grandson’s dinner!”
Mark reacted the same but he did not say anything; he ate quietly.
Everyone thought Mark and Justin always quarreled but the scene that happened over dinner felt normal and peaceful. It was actually the life that everyone sought after.
Lyla was beside Mark. She showed a faint smile from the start but did not join the conversation.
It was 10:00 p.m., dinner was over. Justin lingered for a little longer before leaving.
He did not actually want to leave but Mark almost chased him out with a broom. Otherwise, Justin might have stayed the night.
After Justin left, Hansel and Gretel collapsed on the couch.
Lyla found their exhausted look amusing. “What’s wrong, you two look like you’ve just come back from the battlefield.”
“Stopping a fight is even more exhausting than fighting!” Hansel shook his head helplessly.
Gretel nodded in agreement.
Mark then came over. “You brought this upon yourself, you basically had it coming if you hadn’t let the man come in.”
As though Hansel knew how the conversation would turn out, he bolted up energetically and said, “Okay, let’s call it a day. I’m going to bed!”
He left right after that.
Gretel was in less of a hurry because she joined the battle later than Hansel. “I’m also tired. I’m going back to my room.”
“Where’s Lingo?” Lyla asked her.
“I don’t know. Out to deal with some matters?”
Lyla nodded. “Okay, have a good night.”
Gretel nodded. “Goodnight Daddy, goodnight Mommy.”
She then returned to her room.
Lyla smiled. She turned around and wanted to talk to Mark but she saw the fire in his eyes. Her heart skipped a beat when she looked into his eyes.
“Why are you looking at me like that?”
“You are beautiful.”
Lyla was beaming with joy. “Well you know, it’s not the first day.”
Looking at the proud look, Mark walked up to her and hugged her tightly. “But you are exceptionally beautiful today.”
“Stop it!”
“I’m for real.”
Lyla knew that when Mark showed such a gaze and look, she would be in for a wild night. She chuckled and said, “I’m going up.”
Mark grabbed her. “Where are you going?”
“To the room!”
“I don’t think we did it before here.”
“Mark, you…”
“Or in the kitchen!”
“Let’s start in the living room!”
“Mark! Ah…”
Lyla was instantly silenced.
……
Arden was eventually bailed out but after he came out, he rejected all the interviews and kept himself away from the media. No one saw him after he came out and no one knew exactly why he did it.
As for Kathleen, she stayed in M.K. but with a grudgeful heart. She had always been waiting for a chance to bury Lyla once and for all.
That day, Gretel somehow had the mood to visit the company.
Before she left the house, she even gave Lyla a call. “Mommy, where are you?”
“I’m at the office. Why?” Lyla casually asked.
“I have a surprise for you. Stay there and don’t go anywhere, got it?”
“What surprise?”
“You will know soon enough.”
Lyla chuckled blankly. “Okay, be careful.”
“I got it!”
After she hung up the phone, Lyla softly smiled and returned to work. She was not overly bothered by the so-called surprise.
However, Gretel did not show even after a long wait.
Mark’s heart skipped a beat. He looked at Lyla and when they locked eyes, they were both speechless.
“Did she leave by herself or is she with Lingo?”
“She’s alone. Lingo is with me now,” Hansel said and he quickly sensed something was off.
“She’s not there yet?”
“No, she’s still outside. I’ll call you later.” Mark then hung up the call.
Lyla looked at him. “What if something happens to her?”
“She should be fine, maybe she got carried away or something.”
“Then what should we do now?” Lyla asked.
“You go back and take a rest. I’ll go look for her,” Mark said.
“I’ll go with you.”
“But…”
“Believe me, I can never stay put with her out there,” Lyla said.
Mark reluctantly nodded. He then looked at J behind him and said, “If Gretel comes to the office, call me at once.”
“Yes sir.”
Mark then left the building with Lyla.
The two of them did not voice their deepest concern because they were both afraid of it. Therefore, even if they knew each other well enough, they did not make it clear because they were afraid of it happening.
They drove off and searched for Gretel at every possible place that she might have visited or liked but no sightings of Gretel.
The sky slowly turned dark.
They tried Gretel’s phone again but it was still out of service.
Mark stopped the car beside. Even though he knew Gretel had not been to the office because J would have called him immediately, he called J with a tiny bit of hope.
“Had Gretel been to the office?”
“No…”
Mark’s heart sank. Gretel might be naughty at times but she would never make someone worried about her.
Therefore, even though Mark did not want to accept it, he must face the fact that Gretel was missing.
Lyla’s worries were somehow replaced by calmness after the initial searching. “Let’s make a police report.”
“It’s still within 24 hours, they won’t take the case.”
“Then what should we do?” she asked.
Disappointed, she looked down at her hands and saw something she wore. It reminded her of something and she said, “This this! This can locate Gretel’s location, she’s connected with me! This should work!”
Lyla anxiously took the watch off her wrist, she would have ripped it off her hand if she could.
Mark took the watch and started checking it.
Lyla kept quiet, she placed all her hopes into that watch.
