Kathleen also realized she was bleeding. She was shocked because the scene somehow felt familiar.
“No, how? How could this happen?” Kathleen muttered.
Lyla looked at her and asked, “You are pregnant?”
Pregnant?
Kathleen’s mind buzzed. She was not sure but she knew when she lost her child last time, it looked exactly like this.
“Please, save me, save my child…” Kathleen reached out to Lyla and grabbed her pants.
“Save you? Have you lost your mind? You almost killed her just now!” Lingo said.
She did not believe any of the ‘tricks’ that Kathleen might be showing.
“But the child is innocent, please! Just save the child…” Kathleen said. The fierce and grudgeful look from before disappeared, she was just a pity woman who was trying to save her child by pleading.
“You should be grateful that I didn’t shoot you in the head!” Hansel bellowed and pointed the gun at Kathleen. “Speak, where is my sister!”
“Hansel!” Lyla stopped him and signaled him to put the gun away.
“Mommy! We must make her tell where Gretel is! Now or never!” Hansel said.
Lyla looked at Kathleen. She hesitated for a while before she said, “Let’s bring her to the hospital first.”
“But…”
“Listen to me!” Lyla said with a strict tone.
Hansel was forced to do as told since his mommy meant it.
Mark looked at her. “Are you sure about this?”
“I believe, as a mother, she could understand my feelings. No matter what, the child in her is innocent.”
Mark nodded. Since Lyla had made up her mind, he did not want to pressure her anymore.
He carried Kathleen and left the abandoned building.
In the hospital, everyone was waiting outside of the emergency room. They were waiting for Kathleen.
Hansel and his parents were not worried about Kathleen at all, they were worried if something happened to that woman, they would lose every clue to Gretel.
Lyla and Mark were sitting on the bench together. She did not know how to explain her feelings, especially the feelings for Kathleen.
The woman tried to kill her and yet she decided to help her.
Lyla then realized that she was not helping Kathleen but the child in her.
Kathleen was just a pitiful woman.
If she lost her child again, she might really lose her mind and do something even worse.
Almost half a day later, the emergency room finally opened.
The doctor and nurses came out and Lyla and Mark walked up to them.
“Doctor, how’s she?” Mark asked.
“The child is safe for now but the patient’s body is too weak, she has to rest. If she bleeds again, things might go downhill.”
Lyla sighed a breath of relief.
“I understand. Can we go in to see her now?” Mark asked.
“You can but make it brief. The patient needs rest.”
“Thank you, doctor.”
“You’re welcome.”
After the doctor left, Lyla and Mark told Hansel and the others to wait outside before they went in.
Inside the room, they saw Kathleen on the sickbed with a pale look. Fortunately, she was already awake.
The atmosphere felt a little heavy when they locked eyes. Lyla did not have the mood to ask how Kathleen was feeling, instead she asked, “The child is safe.”
Kathleen tightened her lips and said something that surprised Lyla. “Thank you.”
“I don’t need your gratitude, I want you to tell me where my daughter is!” Lyla said.
“She’s in the trunk of my car in the underground parking lot.”
“Trunk!? What car is it? What’s the plate number?!”
After Kathleen told them the car number, the two of them wanted to leave immediately but Kathleen held them back. “Wait.”
They turned around and saw Kathleen with the key to the car. “We are equal from now on.”
Lyla did not care whether they were equal or not, the only thing she had in mind was Gretel at the moment.
She took the key from Kathleen and left.
Everyone went to the parking lot immediately.
Kathleen laid down on her sickbed and saw them off. She put one of her hands on her stomach and stroked it softly.
A moment later, some police officers came in.
“Ms. Kathleen Turner?”
……
At the parking lot, everyone searched the place like a bunch of mad ants until they found the car.
“Here! I found it!” It was Lingo who found the car at last.
Everyone gathered and Mark opened the trunk with the key. However, when they saw what was in the trunk, their excitement and anxiety were all frozen.
The trunk was empty.
Everyone was stunned.
“Where’s she? Where’s Gretel?!” Lyla asked anxiously. It was obvious that the trunk was empty but they searched the car from top to bottom.
There was not a soul in or around the car.
Mark stood there stiffly, his face looked as sour as it could get.
“Damn it! That woman must be lying to us! I’m going back!”
Lyla had already run back when Hansel said that.
Mark was afraid that Lyla might do something stupid due to her anxiety, he went after her right away.
“Why are you here again?” Kathleen asked nonchalantly.
“Kathleen, where is Gretel?”
“I’ve told you where she was!”
“Stop lying, she’s not even there!”
Kathleen was surprised. She looked at Lyla and saw a pair of red teary eyes. She knew Lyla was not in a joking mood.
“I don’t care what happened between us, the children are innocent. I’ve saved your child, so why can’t you let my daughter go?” Lyla sounded a little agitated.
Kathleen frowned. “You didn’t find her there?”
“If she’s there, why would we be here?”
Kathleen was even more surprised. She shook her head and said, “Impossible, I really kept her in the trunk of the car.”
“Stop lying! Kathleen, what do you want! Tell me, I’ll do anything to have Gretel back!” Lyla said.
Kathleen furrowed her brows tighter. “I really kept her in the trunk of the car, it’s up to you to believe me or not.”
Lyla was silenced because she realized Kathleen had no reasons to lie anymore and she did not look like she was lying.
“I really put her in the trunk of the car. If I’m lying, I’ll die a horrible death,” Kathleen swore.
Everyone else was silenced.
Mark looked at Kathleen. “She’s not there, what do you have to say for yourself?”
Kathleen shook her head. “It shouldn’t be, it shouldn’t be! Did you search the car properly? Or did you get the wrong car?”
Lyla did not speak or react, she spaced out. She did not even hear what Kathleen said in the end.
Half an hour later, they came out.
Hansel waited for them at the entrance. He went up to his parents and asked, “How is it? Where’s Gretel?”
Lyla did not say anything, she simply walked away in a blank state.
Hansel looked at Mark and noticed a terrible look on his face.
Mark shook his head.
“That woman must be playing tricks on us! I’ll go in to talk to her!” Hansel wanted to storm in but Mark stopped him.
“It’s useless now. She’s not lying this time.”
“Then where’s Gretel?”
Mark shook his head. “I don’t know.”
“Daddy, that woman is lying! She’s cunning!”
“The only thing we can do now is gather everyone and search for Gretel.”
“I’ve called everyone from Hell’s Angel in Alpine to search for her already.”
Hansel had already sent his men out once the kidnapping happened.
Mark squinted his eyes and looked fierce. “I will find Gretel even if I have to turn Alpine over!”
