“Wasn’t it all in your plan for that incident to happen?” Lyla questioned.
Shadow frowned. “A bullet to the head. Would that be part of some plan?”
Lyla was taken aback.
So, it was not planned?
She had a sinking feeling in her gut for some reason. Did she get Felix wrong?
“The success rate of the surgery is only 30%. Boss made a will and if he was gone, everything he owned would be passed on to you.”
All the more Lyla was in disbelief. She stared at Shadow with vacant eyes. “Is... Is what you’re saying true?”
“We did lie about one thing. The delaying of time in the midst of this was fake. Thinking his days were numbered, Boss kept dragging things on. Who expected that he would actually get better? Nevertheless, Boss couldn’t stand the thought of you leaving and came up with this idea to bring you here.” Shadow lowered his head. “If you want to put the blame on someone, put it on me. I came up with this idea.”
It was not the time to debate about who should be held accountable.
“I know it’s not the best thing to do but Ms. Lowe, I can’t bear to see Boss torture himself everyday,” Shadow said.
Lyla pursed his lips, going on an emotional roller coaster. She was unable to keep her cool following one rise after another.
There was no such thing as fairness in this world.
She did not have two of herself to give to each of them.
If possible, she wanted to split herself in half. That way, no one would let anyone down.
It was a pity though... There were no ifs.
Lyla remained silent, her eyes lost its focus, all the while having no clue how to break the silence.
Shadow gazed at her with guilt and self-blame. “Ms. Lowe, I hope if it’s possible, to show even a little bit of concern to Boss.”
Lyla looked back at him. “It’s not that I don’t care but I’m afraid that my little show of concern will give him the illusion of a glimmer of hope. He wouldn’t want to let go more than ever,” She uttered.
Pursing his lips, Shadow fell silent. He could never wrap his head around the matters of love. He only considered standing from his own perspective and watching Felix.
His heart went out to Felix.
It really went out to him.
However, Shadow was conscious that Lyla had her reasons.
He had no right to judge her.
Looking at him, Lyla sighed and spoke, “Shadow, if you can’t let me go, can you at least tell me what’s going on with them now?”
Shadow gave it a thought before replying, “Since the day you went missing, Mark has launched an attack on Eastern Union, and it has only grown more vicious. I guess, perhaps he’s trying to force Boss to hand you over.”
Hearing this, Lyla frowned. “And? Is there anything else out of the ordinary?”
Shadow shook his head. “Not for now.”
“Let me know immediately when you get the latest.”
Shadow hesitated for a moment before bobbing his head.
“I should get going if there’s nothing else,” Shadow remarked.
Lyla gave a nod.
Shadow walked out.
Silence once again befell the room. Lyla turned her gaze to the endless blue sea outside the window. All her thoughts seemed to drift along the waves.
......
“You finally show yourself,” Mark muttered through the phone.
Felix grinned. “Isn’t that your objective?”
“Where’s Lyla?” Mark went straight to the point.
“She has already forgotten about you,” Felix faintly replied.
“Do you think I would believe whatever that comes through your mouth?”
“Whether you believe or not, this is the truth.”
“Felix Smith, you better return Lyla to me if you still want your life!” Mark furiously yelled on the line. He would have hurled the phone away had he not just got in contact with him.
“Then kill me,” Felix lightly answered from the other end of the line.
“Felix Smith, believe me when I say that Eastern Union will bear the consequences of your wrongdoing.” Mark would have shot him to death if Felix was before him right now.
The call was terminated.
Hansel came forth. “Daddy, how was it?”
The phone was smashed far away with a loud thud.
Mark’s hands were trembling while veins were popping out of his neck. His bloodshot eyes appeared horrifying amid the late of the night.
It took a while before he was able to overcome his anger. He turned to Hansel. “Nothing. Did you manage to get the address?” Suppressing his fury, Mark asked.
Hansel gave a nod. “Got it.” He immediately presented the address.
After taking a glance, Mark held the piece of paper in his hand and smirked.
Felix Smith!
This time, he was not going to let him go down easy.
“Daddy, I’m afraid that it could be a trap,” Hansel voiced his concern.
Without a word, Mark stared at him.
“He seemed to appear out of thin air. I couldn’t track his whereabouts before but I can find where he is now. I think there must be something fishy going on. Felix was already suspicious of my identity before, so I’m worried...”
“Even if it’s taking the bait, I have to go.” Mark was firm on that.
“But...”
“It took quite the effort to lure him out. I can’t miss this opportunity.” He turned to Hansel. “Your mommy’s whereabouts rest on your shoulders.”
“Daddy, we will really lose any information on Mommy if you fire.”
Mark held the gun. His hands were shaking, his emotions high.
Watching at a side, Gretel moved towards Felix. “Felix...” She cried with tearful eyes.
Felix stared at Gretel. He once spoiled her like a princess and now, she came for him due to another man.
As expected, blood was thicker than water despite how he treated them.
Felix gazed at her, without a word.
“Felix, tell me it’s not true.” Gretel gave him a pitiful look. “Tell me, you wouldn’t do such a thing, right?” Her voice was fragile yet cautious.
“It’s true,” He coldly answered. He seemed rather heartless.
Gretel looked him in the eye. For some reason, her tears started flowing. “Felix, you weren’t like this before...”
“Before?” Felix coldly scoffed. “Don’t bring up the past with me because it reminds me of my former foolishness,” Felix ruthlessly retorted.
“Felix!” Gretel went ahead and grabbed him by the sleeve.
“Stop it.” Felix frigidly cut her off. He returned a look that was stranger than a stranger’s. “I think of you as my own daughter, but you? In your eyes, I guess I will never amount to Mark, right?” He flashed a smile dripping with sarcasm.
“I... It’s not as you described.” Gretel shook her head.
“Okay, I won’t force you. Talk is pointless now. Take care of yourself from now on,” Felix uttered while giving her a look that said they would never meet again before shaking her off.
Gretel looked back with tears flowing down her cheeks. It never crossed her mind that Felix would say such a thing. Her heart sank.
“Felix...” At a loss for words, Gretel merely stared at him.
Refusing to look at her, Felix remained distant in the eyes.
He turned his attention back to Mark. The latter’s exquisite face was tense, as though ready to sacrifice himself to save the damsel in distress. “What? Do you want to kill me? Well, make a move then!”
“Felix Smith!”
“Daddy!” Hansel stopped him once again and shook his head. “No.”
Holding the gun, Mark was shaking out of fury. “Felix, I will find her. Don’t think for a second that you’ll get your way.”
With a cold smirk on his face, Felix swept a glance at him. Without another word, he turned and left.
Mark stood there, watching as Felix took off. The red in his keen eyes looked as though it would set everything around on fire.
He probably would have fired at Felix if Hansel had not stopped him...
Hansel snapped out of his thoughts once Felix faded away from their vision. He focused on Mark. “Daddy, let’s go.”
“Are you sure we won’t be discovered?” Mark threw him a question.
Hansel adopted a stern countenance. “I don’t know but I hope so,” He replied.
Keeping to themselves, they gazed at Felix’s receding figure with a growing abstruse hint in their eyes...
