How was he able to get his hands on surveillance footage from several years ago?
However, she had to admit that there was no questioning Mark’s capability.
Hence, Lyla fell silent.
“Why aren’t you talking?” Mark looked at her and asked.
Lyla frowned. “Mark Pattinson, even if we... did something before, that doesn’t mean that Hansel and Gretel are your children!” Lyla uttered. Hansel and Gretel were her everything. Not knowing what was going inside Mark’s head, she dared not admit to it.
By virtue of his ability, there was no way she could win if Mark were to fight for custody of the children.
Finally.
She relented!
“Lyla, you’re acknowledging it at last!”
Lyla pursed her lips. “I said it. Even if it was me, that doesn’t mean that Hansel and Gretel are your children!”
“Must you force me to do a DNA test!”
“Mark Pattinson!!”
It was Lyla’s turn to fly off the handle. Following an outcry, she gasped in pain due to the wounds on her body hurting from all the strain.
Since it was such a rare sight to see her angry, Mark was filled with an unspeakable sense of achievement.
“What? Are you afraid?”
“What are you really up to?” Lyla asked.
“I want you to admit to it!”
Lyla knew that she could no longer keep the matter under wraps.
It would only come to a more tragic end for her if Mark really took them to do a DNA test.
She paused her lips without saying a word.
There was no way she could ever admit to it!
“Okay, take a rest. I’ll go find them!” With that, Mark was about to take off.
F*ck!
Lyla wanted nothing more than to swear!
“MARK PATTINSON!” She shouted.
“Yes?” Mark slowly turned over and languidly raised his brow.
“I...” Lyla could not find the words.
“Are you admitting to it?” Mark probed.
Frowning, Lyla did not know where to start.
Observing her dilemma, Mark stared at her. “Lyla, I only went to know if they’re my children. Is that too much to ask?” While enquiring, Mark fixed his gaze on her with yearning eyes. There was an indescribable bitterness and helplessness within.
He would not be so persistent on the matter had Hansel not insisted on getting Lyla’s consent.
Without doing the DNA test, he made up his mind that they were his just like that.
However, the significance behind hearing the truth straight from Lyla’s mouth was different.
Lyla laid eyes on him, lost in his words and expression for a moment. Who said that Mark was unsuited to pull the sympathy card? Lyla could not find any words of denial right there and then!
She and Mark were, in fact, the type that toughened up against the strong but were clueless in the face of passive approaches.
“You don’t have to worry too much if your concern is that I’ll steal them away from you. I won’t do that. I initially thought that I’m on my own in this world but now I want to know if they’re my children...”
Mark began his path to partake in an inciting persona.
Lyla’s mind was at ease following his statement.
It had been on her mind that he would take them away from her upon finding out the truth. However, she was relieved by his assurance.
She took a glance at him before lowering her eyes. “You’re right. They’re your children...”
Finally!
She finally admitted to it!
Gazing at her, Mark’s lips curled into a peculiar smile.
With the smile appearing in sight, Lyla was struck by a sudden thought. She wondered if she had been taken for a ride.
“Lyla, you finally came clean!” Mark coldly smirked in utterance. His tone might be unpleasant but he was indeed a lot happier.
At least, he finally heard it from the horse’s mouth. It was sort of an acknowledgment, like a token to walk into the mother and children’s lives, changing his mood for the better!
Lyla frowned. “When did you find out?”
“The moment I saw Hansel!” Mark answered with certainty.
Lyla. “...”
As expected, it was too hard to feign ignorance after looking at Hansel’s face!
This very matter had been eating her up inside. Now that it had happened, she felt the weight lifted off her shoulders.
Mark said it himself that he would not steal them away from her. There was nothing to be afraid of if that was the case.
With that in mind, she left out a sigh of relief.
Seeing her like this, Mark could not hold his tongue. “Lyla, it was really a difficult thing to do to make you confess!” Mark grinned in a rather strange way, so peculiar that Lyla was left scratching her head.
She frowned while keeping to herself.
Who would have guessed that Mark would hurl the tiny USB drive into the trash can?
“You—”
“It’s a fake!” Mark retorted.
“What’s a fake...” Midway, Lyla fixed her gaze at him with eyes abruptly wide open.
“Did you lie to me earlier?”
Instead, he teasingly stared at Lyla. “What? Are you worried?”
“Cut the crap. Wouldn’t you be worried if you were in my place?” Lyla retorted but there was still a little uncertainty hanging over her head. Based on her knowledge of Mark, he was not the type to resort to extreme measures.
Only, that tiny uncertainty involved the people she treasured most. Even if she knew him, she had to get to the bottom of it.
“As a matter of fact, there is a way. Don’t concern yourself with it!”
“What?”
“Don’t worry. I’m not the kind of person to only want the children and leave out the mother. If you become my woman, I might consider accepting you!” Mark said.
Subsequent to his proposal, Lyla immediately grabbed the pillow on the bed and took a throw at him. “Dream on!”
Catching the pillow with ease, Mark stared at her. “I can give you time to think it over!”
“Mark Pattinson, I found out today that you’re a despicably vile man who takes advantage of others!” Lyla was fuming.
Mark, on the other hand, let out a relaxed grin. “I never said that I was that noble!”
“Shameless!”
“Thank you for your compliment!”
Lyla “...”
No one else but Mark would take a name-calling as a compliment.
“I will give you a week to consider!” Mark was clearly pissing her off on purpose. It was an accomplishment to see Lyla flipping mad.
Who knew Lyla would put on a front rather quickly and lock eyes with him? “Mr. Pattinson, do you really want children that much?”
Telling Mark as such, Lyla must have something more to let off her chest.
“Isn’t Ms. Tuner pregnant? You’re about to become a daddy so why rob me of mine!” This was Lyla’s reply.
Mark had the sense that he was really getting to know her.
With a smile, he took steady paces towards her. “Ms. Lowe, do you know what smell I’m picking up on?”
“What?”
“It smells bitter!”
Lyla focused on him. “Mr. Pattinson, you’re not a dog so why the keen sense of smell?”
Color washed off Mark’s face. This woman was recklessly trying his patience.
“Do you know that there’s another characteristic to dogs?” Mark enunciated word by word.
“What?”
“The recipient doesn't matter to them!” He paused at each word.
Intuition informed Lyla that she stepped on his toes again. “Mark Pattinson, behave yourself! This is the hospital!”
It never occurred to her that Mark would scoff instead. “And another characteristic is not differentiating between places!” With that, he grabbed her by the back of her head out of the blue and sealed her lips with a kiss...
With the exquisite face suddenly magnified within her vision, Lyla became a nervous wreck. The scent belonging to him overpowered her, drowning her within. There was nowhere to run. Try as she might to make herself scarce, she could not escape his scent.
