“Why aren’t you talking?” Lyla asked.

Hansel could not find the right words to build a statement.

Nevertheless, Lyla grew more suspicious the more he held his silence. “Don’t tell me, you saw...”

Before she could finish, the door to the ward was suddenly pushed open and in walked Mark in a composed manner. Looking tall and absolutely stunning, he locked his deep eyes on Lyla on the moment of entry.

Lyla thought she was hallucinating the second Mark walked in. Widening her eyes, she seemed to be in disbelief.

Why-why was he here?

Her first thought was to look at Hansel but the boy appeared unfazed.

Nonetheless, Lyla was dumbfounded!

Could someone tell her what was going on?

She wanted to pinch herself to see if she was dreaming!

However, the pain from her wounds reminded her that it was not a dream!

It was real!

Mark had already known!

Lyla wondered if passing out now would do the trick.

From the looks of Mommy staring intently at Mark, she must be feeling guilty. However, it did not stop Hansel from smiling smugly at this different side of Mommy.

“Mommy, what’s wrong?” Hansel playfully grinned.

“What do you think is wrong?” Gritting her teeth, Lyla could barely take her eyes off Mark. “Why is he here?”

Mark had already approached her before Hansel could reply. Watching as the scene unfolded, Hansel and Gretel quickly stepped aside and grabbed the popcorn.

Mark walked over and drew close to Lyla. With both arms propping against the bed, his sharp eyes lowered at her. His face may be smiling but Lyla could sense the growing tension in the room.

She felt a chill creeping up her spine.

“Ms. Lowe...” He faintly spoke.

Lyla struggled to put up a smile. “Mr. Pattinson, what brings you here?”

“I was the one who sent you to the hospital!”

“Really?”

“Yes!”

“Oh, thank you!”

“Don’t mention it!”

The conversation between them seemed extremely pretentious.

Sure, they may be having a chat on the surface but secretly, they had something else on their minds.

The scene was simply too beautiful for Hansel to watch. Hence, he immediately opened up. “Mommy, I need to go and handle something. I’ll be right back!” With that, he threw Lyla a look that told her that she was on her own before turning to leave.

Gretel was also watching on. With her brother gone, there was no reason for her to stay. Thus, she uttered, “I’m hungry. I’m heading out to grab something to eat!” She then got out of the way.

Mark and Lyla were the only ones left in the room.

Hansel leaned against the door the moment the twins stepped out of the room.

“Hansel, what are you doing?”

“Peeking and eavesdropping!”

“Is it really good to do this?” Gretel asked.

“Don’t you want to watch too?” Hansel replied with a question.

Gretel smiled. “Of course I do!” With that, the duo put their weight against the door. As the door was unlocked, they pushed open a crack that enabled them to observe the situation inside.

Honestly speaking, Hansel wanted to see how Daddy was going to “force” Mommy. This major feud of the century was not one to miss.

Lyla’s thoughts would be worth pondering on if she were to find out that the daughter and son she personally raised were watching them in enjoyment.

Inside, the pair were locking eyes. Words may have failed Lyla but one thing was for sure, Hansel and Mark must have talked. Otherwise, it would not have come to this.

Needless to say, she was giving the double-crossing gremlins, Hansel and Gretel, a dressing down under her breath for hanging her out to dry.

Don’t they know that Mark would give her a scary look, as though he was going to eat her up at any time!

Faced with Lyla’s silence, his eyes flickered and his lips perked. “Ms. Lowe, what’s on your mind?”

It was a weird tingle in the air. Mark stared at Lyla with a complicated look on his face. He was dying to see how this woman was going to explain herself!

“Huh...” Snapping out of her thoughts, Lyla put on a fake smile and said, “I was thinking how I should thank you, Mr. Pattinson!”

“Really?”

“Yes!”

“Have you come to a conclusion then?”

“No...”

“Okay, since you haven’t made up your mind, you can think about that later. Ms. Lowe, don’t you think you should tell me or explain something to me?” Mark was grinning but the smile seemed twisted and teeth-gritting. Lyla could imagine how much he wanted to strangle her.

“What?” Playing dumb, Lyla acted as though she did not know what he was on about.

“So it looks like you have nothing to say to me!” Mark retorted with a cold smirk. Only god knew how much he wanted to strangle her. Lyla was refusing to confess despite him seeing through her facade.

Noticing the change in his complexion, Lyla blurted, “There is!”

Mark’s facial muscles relaxed a little. “What?”

Lyla fell completely silent, feeling guilty about the whole ordeal after all.

Outside, Gretel was a little worried. “Hansel, Daddy isn’t going to raise his hand at Mommy, right?”

Hansel watched as the situation turned unfavorable. Mommy’s constant denial would leave anyone... helpless.

“No, Daddy wouldn’t hit a woman!” Hansel replied, well-versed on that fact.

Sure, Mommy looked like she needed some spanking but he firmly believed that Mark was not one to resort to violence!

With concern still playing at the back of Gretel’s mind, the siblings continued to play the part of onlookers.

“Is he my son?” Putting on a straight face, Mark asked Lyla.

Lyla’s heart jumped at the question but she snapped back in supposed composure, “Mr. Pattinson, is this a joke? Why are you asking me if he is your son?”

“Am I wrong?”

“Mr. Pattinson, we haven’t known each other for long. Aren’t you overthinking things a little too much?” Lyla was still trying to throw him off because she could tell that Mark did not have much memory of that night from several years ago. Moreover, it could have been anyone that night. Mark was oblivious after all.

Seeing that she was still refusing to confess, Mark intended to push her to the bitter end and see if she had anymore left to say then.

His mind was set that Hansel and Gretel were his children anyway.

This was a fact that could not be changed.

“Yes, we haven’t known each other for long but Lyla, are you sure that they’re not my children?” Mark paused at every word, as though hinting that he had proof that they were his.

Gazing at him, Lyla was at a loss of words. Nevertheless, with that character of hers, she was going to deny it to the very end, never giving up the game until reality stared at her right in the face.

“Mr. Pattinson, you said it yourself, we haven’t been associated for long so how could they be your children?” Lyla replied with a question, neither admitting or denying it.

Mark had to say, she was smart and adept at disguise. It was a shame that she used her skills in the wrong area.

He slowly approached her and said, “Eight years ago, Aria’s. Was it you that night?” Mark clearly mouthed each word.

Hearing this, Lyla was completely dumbfounded.

As it turned out, he still remembered.

He actually still remembered!

All the more it confirmed Mark’s suspicion, judging by the gobsmacked state Lyla was in. “As expected, it was you that night!” Mark could not discern whether he was pleasantly surprised or angry.

Lyla quickly denied in the face of Mark’s resolution. “What Aria’s? What’s that night? I don’t know what you’re talking about!”

Even though the matter was brought out in the open, Lyla still refused to budge.

“I knew you won’t admit to it so I looked into Aria’s surveillance footage from eight years ago. The person who went into my room was you!” While speaking, Mark took out a tiny USB drive from his clothes. “How about it? Do you want to watch it together?”

Looking at the item in his hand, Lyla knew her luck had run out.

How was he able to get his hands on surveillance footage from several years ago?
