Three years passed like a dream. 

My research with Sarah revolutionized antiviral treatments. Our work with the CDC’s emergency response team led to breakthrough after breakthrough. Eventually, Sarah decided it was time for our community to open its doors – let the younger generation learn from the outside world. 

I never imagined that decision would bring Lorenzo back into my life. 

He arrived with a CDC team seeking our treatments. When he saw me in the clinic consulting with patients, his composure shattered. The packages he carried crashed to the floor as he rushed toward me, enveloping me in a desperate embrace. 

The ruthless Wall Street titan looked haunted now, grief etched in every line of his face. 

“Three years,” he choked out. “I’ve searched everywhere. Every continent, every remote healing center…” 

I laughed bitterly, shoving him away with enough force to send him stumbling. Anyone else would have faced his legendary temper for such an act. Instead, he looked at me with desperate concern. 

“Did I hurt you? I’m sorry, I’ll be gentler next time.” 

“There won’t be a next time, Lorenzo. Our marriage is dead. Don’t touch me.” 

He lunged forward, grabbing me again. “No! Kill me if you want, but don’t push me away.” His lips crashed into mine. I slapped him hard. 

“I can’t stomach unfaithful men who get their mistresses pregnant.” 

“You disgust me.” 

He broke down completely. “I made her terminate the pregnancy! I cut all ties with Isabella. Please, give me another chance. Let me make it right.” 

I pulled away, my voice ice. “Lorenzo, I don’t love you anymore. Whether you believe it or not, you’re not in my future.” 

The light died in his eyes. He swayed like I’d stabbed him. 

“You’re lying,” he sobbed. “Look me in the eyes and say it. Say you don’t love me.” 

His grip on my arm was desperate. I met his gaze steadily. “I don’t love you anymore.”
