Dom’s POV

I pull into the mostly empty parking lot and hop out of Sin’s car.

“Hey I’m really sorry about the wait man. There was traffic and I had to─”

“Yeah whatever. Just give me the keys. I’m gonna be late as it is.”

Shit. I drop them into her open palm. “I’m really sorry Sin.”

She waves off my apology and heads for the driver’s seat. “Just get that damn car already and we good aight? I’ll talk to you later.”

Once she was seated and belted in, she looks out the window at me and winks before pulling off. I sighed, relieved that I hadn’t pissed her off. It has been a long ass week and I was glad it was over. I have the rest of the day off and wouldn’t be needed at the club till tomorrow evening. Sin had ironically been a saint this week, lending me her truck to run errands and move stock while she’d roughed it up with buses. I’d thought I could hold off on buying a car until I padded my nest egg up a little more but I couldn’t go through next week without one. I needed a ride in the next twenty four hours or I’d have to be calling Sin again and I didn’t want to do that. I pulled out my phone from my pocket.

“Siri. Where’s the nearest car dealership?”

The A.I. went to work immediately and seconds later, a list of suitable candidates within a twenty five mile radius appeared on my screen. I avoided the larger outlets like Carvana and AX, they were farther than I liked anyways. But there was one that was just under ten miles away from me. Wyatt’s it would be then.

I crossed the street to get myself some much needed breakfast in the donut store opposite and called an Uber while I stuffed my face. I had most of my details and documents backed up on my phone so I didn’t need to stop home so I could handle insurance and every other thing after I bought the car. A scant twenty minutes later, I was pulling up in front of wide glass doors. I paid my uber and headed in to the front desk. There’s a blonde twenty something year old there who’s perkiness instantly irritated me. I never trusted people who were this keyed up to meet total strangers. Job or not. I wonder where my deeper levels of cynicism came from as I answer the receptionists routine questions about why I’m here and how she can help me. Part of it is Kojo definitely but life has done its own part in making me suspicious of the entire goddamn world. “Please give us a few minutes and an agent will be with you shortly!” Blondie perked and gestured me to a couple of plastic chairs with a wide, creepy smile. I opted to stand instead with my back to the corner wall and buried my hands in my pockets . I idly scanned the busy door, blondie’s voice answering to a phone echoing at the background. I couldn’t wait to get home and get out of these night clothes. My tight leather pants and silk red shirt aren’t that out of place in here but I’ve been in them a long time and leather sweats a lot. I resisted the urge to reschedule for later because if I went home, I sure wasn’t coming out again till tomorrow. I was so damn tired, I thought with a heavy sigh. True to her word, the receptionist called me barely five minutes later.

“Agent Parks will attend to you shortly.”

Agent Parks? Did I make a wrong turn to the federal Bureau? I hope not because I wasn’t entirely certain I hadn’t made it to someone’s shit list there. I hope this meant they took their business seriously.

That hope is recanted when a moment later, a familiar tiny little pretty boi with a smart mouth walks out of a hall way. She doesn’t see me as first, frowning at something the middle aged white guy walking beside her is saying. I straighten when they approach the front desk and catch the end of their conversation.

“You better straighten up Shawne because I’m getting tired of all these complaints!” He hissed at her before stalking off to attend to other customers, after a tight nod at me. Shawne takes one look at me and her jaw drops. It would have been comical if not for the sudden spark of anger I felt at seeing her.

“Nigga are you stalking me?” She had the audacity to blurt and I glared. Oh hell nah. “You know what? I don’t have to take this shit again. I’m outta here.”

I turned and headed straight for the door. “Wait!” Shawne called after a moment but I was done waiting. One time was one thing but getting a public dress down from a bitch less than half my size wasn’t happening again.

“Dom wait!” She must have ran after me because slim fingers are wrapping around my elbows and tugging me around. I allow myself get pulled back and glare at her. She flinched and dropped my arm immediately, a slight tinge coming to her cheeks. Despite my anger, my arm is tingling at the spot where her skin touched mine and I cursed myself for it. I needed to get laid if I was this bothered by elbow grabs.

“Well?” I ask after almost a minute of silence and shuffling. “If you don’t mind I’d like to get on with my day. I need a car from a dealer who won’t embarrass me in front of the entire store.”

She winces and then sighs. “Look, I’m sorry okay? I… I ain’t handle things well the other night and I… Um… I didn’t mean to make you feel… I mean I wasn’t tryna… I just… I’m sorry okay?”

“That all?” I said even though I’m surprised. As I wonder what might’ve influenced this sudden sad ass attempt at an apology, movement catches my eye behind her and I can see the slightly overweight white guy from earlier observing us anxiously. The manager tag on his company blue shirt and frown on his face tells me everything I need to know about Shawne and her fake ass apology. Christ was anything about her genuine?

“Um, yeah I guess. I just wanted you to know I was sorry.”

“Cool.”

I said and start to turn away again.

“Wait!”

I pause. “What?”

She stared at me awkwardly for a moment “I dunno man. I just… Are we good?”

“Nah. But I heard you.”

She looks so disappointed at that response that I almost relent but I stand my ground. “Oh. Okay. But for what it’s worth, I really am sorry. I had some time to think about shit and I realized I wouldn’t want anyone to treat me like that just because I liked them and they didn’t fuck with my type that way. So… um… yeah. That’s all.”

She hurried back and I started to go my own way. My hand was on the door when I stopped and sighed. Dammit.

“Shawne. Wait.”

I turn and hurry after her, catching up in a few long strides. She halts and the look on her face is cautious, as if she’s expecting me to give her the same treatment. The thought crosses my mind only fleetingly, but I know I’d never do something like that. Especially at her work place.

“Alright. I accept your apology but if you’re doing it cause of your boss─”

“No! That’s not it! I mean, he’s gon’ be pissed if I drove out another customer but I dead ass been thinking about coming to see you or some shit. Just not… you know─” She rubbed the back of her head “-So soon.”

“Oh.”

“I get it if you want me to keep my distance but… you a pretty cool person and I wouldn’t mind hanging out sometimes.” She flushes then mutters quickly “As just friends though.” My smile is wry. As if after her last reaction to the idea of two studs together I can mistake her offer for anything else.

“Alright. Cool. I think I’d like that.”

“So this mean we can start over?” I hadn’t been expecting this when I’d walked into this store, hell I hadn’t even known she worked here but it made the other night sting a little less. “Why not?” I stretched out a hand and she blinked at it. “Dominique Fraiser. It’s lovely to meet you…?” I raised my brow in question “Uh… Shawne. Shawne Parks.” She stretched out her smaller hand and I shook it, resisting the urge to linger. Maybe I should refuse being friends after all. My attraction to her would obviously not go away so easily. She looked so relieved I didn’t even have the heart to wonder what words to use. After everything I’d done in the past decade I still didn’t have the guts to hurt a pretty woman’s feelings. Pathetic.

“So you really did come to get a car?”

I give her an ‘of course’ look and she blushes “It’s not like I’m doubting you! I wanna know if I should show you around or if you would still rather…?” She gestured in the direction of the doors and I thought for a moment before shrugging. I was already here and she’d apologized for being a bitch. Why not?

I nod and she gives me a small grin then turns to lead the way. I try not to notice her trim body outlined in her almost tight khaki work pants. Her dark blue shirt is tucked into her pants with a neat, black belt holding the two in place. Her hair is plaited into two large bunches and tied back, giving a flattering view of her sharp fade. She is so fine and if I can’t have her in the way I want, it’ll be interesting to hang around such a hot new friend.

She takes me back to the hall she’d come from. After a short walk, it opened into the main garage.

“So this is our first level cars. It’s got the usual; mom cars, teenage boy cars, teenage girl cars.” I gave her an amused look “Is this how you intend to sell me your stock?”

“Ah ah. Patience boi. Who’s the instructor here?”
