Chloe remained silent, her head bowed. Lewis was her only hope. Her father hadn’t contacted her, so she needed a backup plan. Luckily, Lewis still liked her. 

Lewis said, “Chloe is just our adopted sister; she has no blood relation to the Lands. I’ve liked her for years. If my leg hadn’t been injured, I wouldn’t have waited until now to say this.” Alice found it strange. Chloe, in Alice’s understanding, despised the Lands and wanted to marry into wealth. Why would she agree to be with Lewis now? Unless it was to escape the repercussions of the kickback scandal. The

Ethan remained unconvinced. Alice found the excuse flimsy. 

But Lewis looked at Alice.“Alice, Chloe will be your sister–in–law, a member of our family. Yo can’t treat your own family like this.” 

Alice clapped her hands.“How dramatic!” She hadn’t expected this move from Chloe. 

She wanted to tell Lewis she’d signed a severance agreement with the Lands and didn’t care who Chloe was with. But that was before. She’d returned to the Land family to expose the people behind Chloe. Giving up now would ruin everything. 

Alice said impassively, “What does it matter to me? She’s not marrying me.” 

“Alice, if 

you drop the charges, we’ll forget about you making the amputation decision.” Lewis’s tone was arrogant. 

Chloe, with reddened eyes, choked back tears.“Fifth brother, I can’t let you suffer like this. Since I made the mistake, I should take the punishment.” 

“No, Chloe, I won’t let you go to jail. I’ll protect you. Believe me.” Lewis held Chloe’s hand, looking deeply affectionate. He turned to Alice.“What do you say?” 

Alice was speechless; she hadn’t expected Lewis to like Chloe. But Lawrence spoke.“Fifth brother, I don’t understand. What does your amputation have to do with Alice? Big brother didn’t want to take responsibility, so he didn’t answer Alice’s calls, forcing her to sign for the amputation.” 

Lawrence’s words were another bomb. 

Alice exclaimed, “Is that true?” It explained why Ethan hadn’t answered the phone during the emergency. What was more important than his brother’s life? 

“It’s true. Second brother told me personally.” 

Alice looked at Ethan with sarcasm. That look enraged him; he threw a glass at Lawrence.“What

Alice sneered. Then let’s call Second brother and ask. She called Nathan, but it went to voicemail, though she was almost certain Lawrence was telling the truth. 

Lawrence, indignant, looked at Ethan Big brother, am I wrong?” 

Ethan, guilty, stammered, “You misheard me. I regretted not answering Alice’s call, leading to your fifth brother’s amputation.” 

Alice asked, “What if you had answered?” 

Ethan hesitated. ‘I would have considered it carefully.” 

“What if not amputating would have killed him?” 

Ethan was speechless; the only option was amputation to save his life, but he couldn’t say that. He finally retorted, “Who knows what would have happened?” 

“Right, who knows? But you all blame me! Is that fair? Alice exclaimed. “I’ll make the foundation hold Chloe accountable. We’ll see if she’s invincible!” 

Alice went upstairs. The hall fell silent. 

Lawrence said sarcastically, “Big brother, you disappoint me. I’ll contact Second brother to clarify the truth and prevent Alice from taking the blame.” 

“You’re out of line! Who gave you permission to talk to me like that? Ethan was flustered; everyone was siding with Alice! The past was the past; did the truth matter? 

After Lawrence left, only three remained. 

Lewis approached Ethan.“Big brother, Chloe and I are together. Will you just watch her get arrested?” 

Ethan looked at Chloe.“Did she really agree to be with you and marry you?” He felt guilty about Lewis’s disability. He’d always indulged Lewis, but he never expected him to like Chloe. 

Lewis said happily,“Chloe agreed, so I rushed back.” 

“What if she’s lying?” Ethan wasn’t stupid. He felt Chloe had changed, becoming more cunning and ambitious. That wasn’t the problem; it was using her family to escape punishment that disgusted him.
