After a long while, Lily moved her fingers away from the little girl’s wrist. The little girl did not throw a tantrum when Lily took her pulse and only looked at Lily quietly.
Lily did not say a word and slowly got to her feet. Dr. Blanc knew Lily was sad and did not say much except, “Do you need a break?”
Before Lily could reply, the little girl said timidly, “Am I going to die?”
“Nonsense! You won’t, okay?” Dr. Morris, who had been quiet, spoke. He hurried over, tucked the blanket around the little girl, and put the toy back into her hand. “You only have a cough and fever. You’ll be fine after a few days.”
“But… my mommy died,” she said softly, slightly quivering. She was trying to suppress her feelings, but her eyes were already brimming with tears since she was still a kid.
Lily was shocked and looked toward Dr. Blanc. She saw the usually calm man turning his head away in silence. It was clear that what the girl said was true.
“Your mommy had a different disease than yours. You'll get well soon if you’re a good girl and take all the necessary medicine and injections. Did you forget what your mommy told you? That you must be strong and live well,” Dr. Morris spoke gently, unlike his usually indifferent self.
The little girl bit her lower lip and nodded obediently, looking rather pitiful.
“You’re not going to die and will surely get well, okay? Don’t worry,” Lily said while gently caressing the little girl’s head. If she previously wanted to find a cure only for her family and friends' sake, she became even more determined to tackle the difficult task.
“Why are there people dying?” Lily was most concerned about that as she had never heard about it.
“I know the virus is spreading fast overseas, but not in our country, and I’ve never heard about people dying here. How can anyone die from the virus?” She was somewhat agitated and could not calm herself thinking about the child and the fear in her eyes.
That little girl made Lily think about Galen, her unborn twins, and millions of other children.
‘She’s so young and hardly knows anything. Yet she lost her mother and got infected with such a disease! What has she ever done to deserve this? Worse, the pandemic is not a natural disaster but something humans created!’
