Maddie stared at him, puzzled and teary-eyed, "Did I misunderstand you?"

"I've been single because women are a handful, a lot of trouble! And I hate trouble! Mark my words, if you ever bring any drama, don't expect me to stick around!"

Maddie didn't quite grasp his words even when she reached her doorstep.

She didn't go in right away. Instead, she called Stephanie, asking what Putnam meant.

Hearing Maddie's story, Stephanie's eyes lit up, "Maddie, Putnam means if you don't stir the pot, behave yourself. He'll stick by you!"
