Mia leaned over to Annie, her tone warm but practical. “Being pregnant is already tough—you shouldn’t be pushing yourself. But if you wait until after the baby’s here to have the wedding, you know people will talk.”
Conner just smirked. “Let them talk. With me around, who’d dare say a word about Annie? I’ll go public the minute we’re back—tell everyone I’m gonna be a dad. Shotgun wedding, that’s right. Annie only agreed to marry me because the baby gives me bragging rights with her. End of story.”
Andre chimed in, more cautious. “Keep it down, will you? Things are still messy outside.”
Conner caught his meaning and nodded. “Don’t worry. I haven’t forgotten about the Dark Web.”
Mars came over, his kid in his arms. “Hey Conner, Asher wanted me to ask—any luck finding your sister-in-law?”
Later that evening, Mars was rubbing his backside, grumbling. “Man, you two dads really love kicking me. It wasn’t even my question—Asher just told me to ask, and still, I get kicked.”
Andre shot his not-so-bright friend a look. With his curious little boy in one arm and his wife’s hand tucked in the other, he turned to Annie and Conner. “We’re heading out. Annie should get some rest tonight. If you’re not staying, Mia can come over and hang out.”
Mia nodded, eager. “Yeah, I could be her bodyguard.”
Mars grinned. “The famous ‘Silent Ring’ herself, Andre’s treasured wife, playing bodyguard for a tough cop? Bit of a waste, don’t you think?”
Mia looked surprised. “How do you know about my ‘Silent Ring’ nickname?”
Andre’s internal alarm bells rang. Mars glanced at Andre, swallowing. How could he explain? Just then, his loyal godson interrupted, “I’m dir—waaah!” Out of nowhere, Henry started bawling, catching everyone off guard.
Mia blinked. “You’re dirty again? I didn’t even hit you—what are you crying for?”
Henry’s little butt hurt—his dad had pinched him in secret.
Conner and Mars seemed to get it. Mars caught Andre’s warning glare, while Conner strolled over and scooped up poor Henry, gently rubbing his backside.
What else could Henry do? If he didn’t cry, his dad would be the one in trouble tonight.
