Leo grabbed a seat and took in the scene—there were already plenty of people around, and before long, even more drifted in.
“Chunky, scoot over. I’m sitting next to you,” Leo called out.
Chunky, halfway through a mouthful of chips, shot him a look. “Leo, don’t get all friendly out of nowhere. Every time you sidle up, I know you’re plotting something.”
Leo threw an arm around Chunky’s shoulders, reached straight into his snack bag, and helped himself to a chip. “Come on, do you really think your buddy would set you up? I play fair when I recruit people—no tricks, just honesty.”
Chunky just stared at him. “Recruit, huh? Here we go again.”
Someone nearby laughed. “Leo, you’re trouble. Chunky’s too pure for your schemes.”
Leo grinned and patted Chunky’s stomach. “Seriously, man, you could stand to drop a few pounds.”
Chunky turned away, stuffing another chip into his mouth with a huff.
“You’ve met my girl, right?” Leo went on. “She’s super slim now, but back in the day, she was a total snack monster—Miss Anya, the reigning queen of junk food. Hanging out with me, though, look at her now! She’s lost the weight and looks amazing.”
Chunky rolled his eyes. “So you’re telling me if I start hanging out with you, I’ll just lose weight by magic?”
Leo nodded. “Exactly. Look, be real—your fatty liver’s getting serious. Why don’t we join forces?”
Leo was making his pitch in front of everyone.
People listened in, some even egging him on. Sure, there was the usual banter and a bit of envy over Leo’s knack for winning people over, but in this group, there were no deep grudges or messy drama.
Everyone seemed invested in helping get Chunky off the couch and into shape. “Come on, Chunky—go work with Leo. The guy’s sharp and he’s got big plans. You help him out, he helps you slim down. Being a homebody is fine, but you can’t hide out forever.”
Tony chimed in, “If Leo can really get you to lose a hundred pounds, you’ll be engaged by New Year’s!”
Chunky shifted away, grumbling, “You’re all Leo’s cheerleaders, aren’t you?”
Leo kept his arm around him. “Come on, Chunky, what do you say?”
