Coleen let out a long sigh. “Chad’s the only one I never lose sleep over. Molly, though—she’s always the family’s biggest handful.” She’d hoped that now Molly had found her people, things might finally settle down for the Byrne family.
No such luck. Now her son had come home half-blind and brought Molly right back with him.
Round and round they went, and somehow, Molly always landed right back under their roof.
Speaking of trouble, Molly herself was sitting cross-legged on the bed, locking eyes with her son. “Wayne, we need to have a talk.”
Wayne looked up at his mom, already plotting his escape. He turned and started crawling away.
Molly just reached over and hauled him right back. Chad, freshly showered, came out to see the two of them stuck in a standoff.
He couldn’t help but laugh. Honestly, what kind of serious talk could you have with a kid like Wayne—the same kid who once ate dirt on a dare?
Chad got ready for bed and flopped down, watching his wife and son’s negotiation drag on.
Eventually, Wayne passed out mid-lecture, lips still in a pout.
Molly huffed, “I’m talking to you, Wayne! Are you even listening?”
Wayne was already in dreamland. Molly shot Chad a look and jabbed a finger at Wayne. “You see this? He’s totally ignoring me.”
Chad just shrugged. “Let’s toss him in with the others so we can finally get some sleep.”
So Wayne got carried off to Henry’s room.
By then, James was snoring away and Henry was curled up like a little dumpling. Andre sat nearby, gently rubbing his son’s tiny arm, worry clouding his face. “I swear, Henry’s gotten skinnier lately.”
Chad glanced over at his nephew’s round cheeks. “Maybe a little, but he’s just growing up—running around burns it all off.”
Andre had even brought in Henry’s toy race car for the night. During the day, Henry zoomed through the house like a tornado.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa! Watch it, kid! Grandpa’s spent fifteen years on those hedges!” Hansen yelled from the porch. “Don’t you dare crash into them—go easy when you back up!”
