CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR
*************************
BRINLEY.
"Good morning, Ms. James."
"Morning," I smile up at Dr. Gram; she frowns.
"Ms. James. Have you been sleeping well?" She asks, tilting her head, waiting for my reply.
No.
I only got an hour of sleep after Xander's crude texts. I tossed and turned all night. Finally, when the time on the clock read 4:00 am, I gave up and spent the early hours making breakfast, and at six, I decided on a run. After I finished that and was about to shower to get ready for my appointment, I noticed the dark circles under my eyes.
Not even concealer would hide it.
"I couldn't sleep last night,"
Dr. Gram hums.
"I was nervous about today," I add quickly. Dr. Gram smiles, "It's only a sonogram today. You will get to see your baby," I smile at that.
I have been feeling the baby move a lot these last few weeks. I was so nervous the first time I felt it, and I called Dr. Gram for an appointment, and she stared at me with pure amusement. After she finally realized I didn't know what was happening to me, she told me it was the baby moving.
"How is your appetite?"
"Ugh, I can't seem to get full," Dr. Gram laughs, "That's excellent news. That means the baby is growing."
Dr. Gram pulls a tube of purple subsistence from under the monitor screen.
"Lift your shirt," I do as Dr. Gram tells me, and I lift my shirt, and Dr. Gram. places a blue cloth in the waistband of my leggings and pulls it down an inch or two.
"This jelly will be warm," She says as she quirts some on my lower abdomen. "You'll feel a little pressure," She said as she put the wand on my stomach. Dr. Gram pressed the wand into my skin; my eyes darted to the small screen.
I couldn't make out anything as Dr. Gram told me my ovaries and other organs she named off. "Everything looks great. Now let us take a look at the baby," She says. I smile, nod my head, and glance back at the screen.
"This is the head," Dr. Grams says, measuring it. "Do you see the foot?" She asks, pointing at the screen.
Sure enough, you can see a little foot with toes, and my smile reached my ears. "There's the heartbeat," She points to the tiny fluttering. She pauses the wand and presses a button, and my baby's heartbeat fills the room.
"The heartbeat is strong and healthy," I nod, wiping the tears away with the back of my hand.
"Can you tell the gender?"
"I can look," Dr. Gram says, moving the wand again. "Don't get your hopes up. You still might not see anything." I nod once.
"It's a boy," Dr. Gram smiles.
*****
Dr. Gram agreed to keep the gender of my baby a secret. I didn't want to tell Dr. Gram what was going on between Xander and me, but I had no choice. She was concerned about not getting enough sleep and not gaining enough weight. So I told her everything about Xander.
Lucy and Knox offered to drive me to my appointment, but I refused. Walking is good to clear the head, and according to Dr. Gram, I need more exercise.
Ugh, I need a nap.
Not getting no sleep last night has taken its toll on me. I feel so exhausted. The more I breathe out, I can feel how stretched and tight my stomach is.
After walking for over twenty-five minutes, the house comes into view, and I mentally groan.
I should have taken the ride.
The closer I got to the mansion, I noticed a black Ferrari parked at the main doors. That car looks oddly familiar. Where have I seen it before?
'Isn't that Xander?' Sage perks up a little.
Shit, she's right.
'I knew it familiar,' I muttered.
