CHAPTER THIRTY-SEVEN
***********************
BRINLEY.
"Brinley, I didn't mean to cause trouble between you and the Alpha King,"
I shake my head.
"You didn't," I hold my chin up and force a smile.
"Now, shall we find Amanda?"
Gabriel nods.
I walk back into the house with Gabriel following in suit. I head in the direction of the backyard where the kids are playing.
Gabriel and I look all over, but no sign of Amanda.
"Are you sure you left her here?"
Gabriel nods.
"I'm sure,"
I shrug my shoulders.
"Maybe she is getting some tea," I tell him and motion for him to follow.
Just before I open the door to the Kitchen, Amanda comes down the stairs holding a baby in her arms.
"Gabriel, look," Amanda says, showing him the baby in her arms.
I frowned.
I don't remember the nuns having a baby this small.
"We better talk to the nuns," I tell them. "They may be just watching him," I inform the two of them, and the smile that spread across Amanda's face falls.
**********
"He was dropped off on our doorstep last night with a blanket and note that said I cannot care for him. Find Henry a good home," Sister Mary Danvers says, heaving a sigh.
"Have he seen a doctor?" I ask her, and she shakes her head.
"I haven't taken him yet," She says, taking a sip of her tea.
"Can we adopt him?" Amanda asks.
The nun shakes her head.
"Afraid not. We cannot release a child until he has seen a doctor. And that might be a few more days; I don't have the time today or tomorrow,"
Amanda nods.
"Sister, I can take him to Dr. Jacob. I don't mind," I tell her.
"You've done enough for us, Luna. I cannot ask any more of you," She says, shaking her head.
"You didn't ask. I volunteered,"
"Are you sure you have the time?"
I nod my head.
"I'm certain."
*********
"Well, from my exam, he looks to be a couple of weeks old and healthy. So I don't see why Henry here couldn't be adopted," Dr. Jacob says.
I nod my head.
"I was trying to be sure he was okay. My friends want to adopt him, and you can't adopt them out without being checked by a doctor,"
Dr. Jacob shakes his head.
"He is fine. Here is a note stating what I did when your friends take him home for a regular check-up," He says, handing me the paper.
"Thanks for your help," I tell him as I walk out of the door and out of the office.
I can't wait to get back and tell Amanda and Gabriel the excellent news. I've been trying to focus on anything other than Xander and him being so mad at me. His words still ring in my rears as if he is roaring them out loud.
"You'll pay for this,"
'He has a right to be angry. You disobeyed him and let Gabriel come here; you knew of his intention he could have hurt you,' My wolf Sage quips.
I shake my head.
'Is so wrong to want to mend my relationship with Amanda? Gabriel is her mate, and when I visit my family, I'm bound to run into him, so why not fix it all now?' I ask.
She shakes her wolf head.
'You hurt Xander and his wolf. I can feel it,' She pouts.
I frowned.
'You're communicating with his wolf? Do you know how dangerous that is?' I replied.
'I haven't. But I feel his wolf, my mate. He longs for me, and I-I,' She sighs, shaking her head.
'And you hate not being able to be with him?' I finish for her. She nods.
'I'm sorry, Sage; if you want, I can tell Xander about you,'
She shakes her head.
'I can't risk losing you, my little Human. I'll be fine,' She says as she cowers in the back of her mind closing me off again.
I feel bad for Sage. She wants to be close to Xander, and Maybe if I tell him the truth about her, his wolf Might fight to keep her safe.
I have to do this for Sage.
*********
"So, that's it?" Amanda pauses, looking at Sister Mary Danvers, "We can take him home?"
She shakes her head.
"You both have to take these papers to the King. He signs, then you both sign, and it is done. After that, you will be able to Henry home," She tells them.
Amanda smiles and turns to Gabriel.
"Let's go get these signed," She tells him. Her smile brightens up the room. She's that excited.
But Gabriel nor I have told Amanda about Gab's encounter with Xander yet.
"Amanda," Gabriel starts.
"Let us go. I'll explain everything to her on the way," I cut Gabriel off. She frowns.
"Tell me what?"
Gabriel grabs her hand and kisses it gently.
"Nothing for you to worry about, my love," He says, and she nods.
*******
"Gabriel, this is a bad idea. He thinks you made a move on Brinley, not to mention your attempt to hurt her at the party. He will kill you, and I'm not ready to lose you, so let's take Henry back to the orphanage," She says, tears brimming her eyes.
Gabriel hits the brakes and cups her face.
"We are not leaving here without our son," He tells her firmly.
She sighs.
"I can't lose my mate," She says, her lip quivering.
"You won't," He tells her.
She nods, and Gabriel begins to drive the five minutes to the palace.
