"Mr. Lu," Nancy addressed Charles while he was sitting in front of her. "Ms. Zhang has bad intentions, and Sheryl doesn't get much peace these days. What are you going to do?" She didn't bother to hold back or sugarcoat her words, as she knew he understood what she meant.

Charles nodded. Even Nancy could see it clearly, so he wondered why Melissa didn't.

"Relax, Nancy. I've arranged everything, so you don't need to worry about these things anymore," he told the woman. "What I need you to do now is take good care of my mother." Charles was relieved that their housekeeper was as devoted as she was sensible. He could relax as long as she looked after his mother.

"Okay." Nancy smiled. "I believe you, so I won't say anything about the matter anymore. But please, Mr. Lu..." Nancy looked at Charles solemnly. "Don't do anything that will make Sheryl sad again."

"Don't worry. I won't," Charles assured her.

This made Nancy feel much better. The two of them talked for a little more before Nancy had to make breakfast.

When Leila and Melissa got up, they saw Charles waiting for them in the living room.

"Charles, what are you doing up so early?" Leila inquired. "You should rest some more."

Charles looked at her briefly before turning his attention back to whatever he was doing before the two came down. He suspected Leila even more as she seemed to deliberately offer him care and consideration.

An awkward silence filled the room, and Leila quietly took the seat in front of Melissa.

Noticing her son's cold behavior toward Leila, Melissa shook her head and turned to Charles. "Charles, why don't you take Leila with you to the office after breakfast?"

"Okay," he replied nonchalantly.

Since Charles was lost in thought so early in the morning, Melissa decided not to prod him any further. It was best to take some things little by little.

When Nancy was almost done preparing breakfast, Melissa led Leila to the dining room. She looked over to Charles, who had remained seated. "Sweetheart, it's time for breakfast."

Charles barely acknowledged his mother before walking after them to the breakfast table.

Melissa filled the dining room with stories of Leila and the things she had done for Shining Company. It was obvious to anyone listening that Melissa was putting Leila on a pedestal in an attempt to make Charles acknowledge the girl.

She wanted Charles to know the state that the Shining Company would have been in if it weren't for Leila.

"Mother," Charles, no longer able to contain his irritation, interrupted. "It's alright. I understand very well what went on while I was gone."

"Nancy made wonderful eggs this morning. Aunt Melissa, have some," Leila cut in. She was afraid that Charles would say something that might insult or belittle her.

She had noticed the impatience on Charles' face.

Melissa shut her mouth and focused on her plate.

As soon as he was done with breakfast, Charles excused himself to prepare for work.

When he went back down, he found Leila waiting in the living room.

"Charles," she called. "Let's go. We're going to be late." Leila was afraid Charles would leave without her, so she made sure to finish getting ready before him.
