I wait patiently to hear back from my mindless henchman – hoping he had already completed his task when I receive a message. 

“Task failed. Your beloved showed up. If I go down, you’re going with me.” I shiver as u read the message. Surely, Leo wouldn’t have noticed him as the same man who kidnapped us all those years ago and “crippled “me. If he did, he would’ve said something to me – I’m sure of it. 

Although Leo hadn’t returned so how sure could I actually be? I walk out of my room in search of that useless housemaid when I spot her polishing the silverware in the kitchen. 

“Where’s Leo?” I ask from behind her. She turns in shock as she didn’t hear me approach. 

“Oh, Charlotte. It’s you. I didn’t hear you coming now that you don’t use walker anymore.” She says as she grips her chest in relief. 

“Ms. Charlotte. Now where is Leo?” I ask again. I was growing impatient by the 

moment. 

“I don’t know. He grabbed his jacket and ran out the door without a word. Not even to me.” She says as she returns to the silverware. 

I lean against the counter beside her – studying her face and find her even more useless in that moment and turn back to my room. 

Once I read my bed, I see I have a message from an unknown number. 

“I heard the news. Call me.” I catch my breath as I read it. I begin pacing as the paranoia grows. Had someone figured out my intentions? Had Claire pieced it together? I was so careful. 

I pushed those thoughts aside and pick up the phone. I call the number. Maybe money would serve me purpose in this matter. A paid silence is better than an open disclosure. 

“Hello?” I wait silently for a response. 

“It’s been a while mon Cher.” Only one person had called me that. It couldn’t be? 

“Francisco?” 

“I’ve missed the way my name rolls off your tongue. How are you?”

“I’m doing fine. It’s a surprise hearing from you.” Francisco and I had a fling back when I was crippled. Seeing as Leo was preoccupied with that peasant – I needed to source my own pleasure.
